Turntide Technologies outlines its approach to electric mobility in India, highlighting localized manufacturing, advanced motor and inverter technologies, and plans for regional exports to support sustainable transportation across diverse vehicle segments.
Turntide aims to revolutionize the transportation sector with its innovative products and sustainable technologies. In an interview, Pradumna Walimbe, Managing Director of Turntide Asia Pacific, shares insights on the company’s vision for India’s electric vehicle future.
Could you provide a brief overview of your products and highlight the key factors that set them apart?
Turntide Technologies designs, develops, and manufactures electric motors, power electronics, and thermal equipment for a wide range of electric and hybrid vehicles: two-, three- and four-wheelers—both passenger and commercial. Its standout products include the axial flux motors, and electrification solutions tailored for diverse sectors.
Our key differentiators include:
Energy Efficiency: Turntide’s axial flux motors signifi - cantly reduce energy consumption.
Sustainability: The company focuses on decarbonization by modernizing and optimizing electric and hybrid systems to reduce global carbon footprints.
Advanced Technology: Turntide integrates softwaredriven control systems and high-performance axial flux motors for efficiency and optimized functioning.
Versatility: Its solutions cater to a wide range of applications, from urban e-mobility to industrial equipment and marine vessels.
What unique characteristics of the Indian market have infl uenced Turntide’s strategy? How do you refi ne your solutions to cater to this market?
Turntide Technologies has tailored its strategy for the Indian market by addressing unique characteristics such as the high demand for electrification solutions in light-duty vehicles (two-wheel, three-wheel, and light commercial vehicles), heavy duty commercial vehicles (including hybrid), and the challenging road and environmental conditions.
To cater to these needs, Turntide has localized manufacturing through partnerships with local manufacturers like Kaynes Technology in Mysuru, to build a robust supply chain and align with the “Make in India” initiative.
We have customised our flagship, advanced power electronics products (e.g., Gen 4, Gen 5, and Gen 6 series inverters) and axial flux motors for compact design, high torque density, and reliability under the environmental conditions in India. We are also launching a Center of Excellence in Pune to collaborate closely with OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers to ensure that our solutions are tailored to local consumer demands.
How has the company performed over the last few years, and what are its growth projections for India?
Turntide Technologies has demonstrated signifi cant growth over the past few years, driven by its innovative electrification solutions and strategic expansions. The company has been recognized for its leadership in green technology, including being named among the World’s Top GreenTech Companies 2025 by Time magazine.
In India, Turntide has made substantial strides by launching advanced power electronics and axial flux motors to support the country’s burgeoning electric mobility sector.
Turntide’s growth projections in India and the APAC Region are optimistic, given the areas’ rapid industrialization and increasing demand for sustainable energy solutions. The projected growth of the Indian industrial sector presents robust opportunities for Turntide.
Can you elaborate on “Make in India” and your localization strategy and how it aligns with the company’s broader goals?
The “Make in India” initiative encourages innovation and adoption of advanced technologies. Turntide can benefit from this by integrating cutting-edge manufacturing technologies and methods into its operations, enhancing efficiency and competitiveness in the electric mobility sector.
Turntide can use government programs, such as production-linked incentives (PLI) schemes, which are designed to encourage domestic manufacturing across key sectors, including automotive and electronics. By establishing a strong manufacturing base in India, Turntide can cater to the domestic market and leverage India’s strategic location to export its products to other regions, aligning with the initiative’s export growth ambitions.
Beyond serving the domestic market, does the company also want to export from India? If so, which markets will you cater to?
Yes, Turntide plans to use its manufacturing base in India to serve the domestic market and export to other Asia-Pacific countries. Target markets include rapidly growing EV hubs such as Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam. These countries are experiencing signifi cant growth in EV adoption because of supportive government policies, rising environmental awareness, and increasing demand for sustainable mobility solutions.
Axial flux motors are gaining traction in the EV industry. What key advantages do they offer over traditional radial flux motors, particularly in automotive applications?
Axial flux motors deliver exceptional performance through their industry-leading efficiency of up to 95% and a remarkable peak torque density of around 20 Nm/kg, directly translating to extended vehicle range and superior acceleration. Their design excels in minimizing vibration and cogging torque, providing smoother operation particularly at low speeds where torque delivery is maximized for improved hill-climbing and acceleration.
The innovative stackable architecture allows for customizable power outputs across various applications, while advanced liquid cooling systems maintain optimal temperature under demanding conditions. These motors integrate seamlessly into diverse vehicle platforms thanks to confi gurable connection points and spline systems. They also require less room for installation, which is critical in the space-constrained applications in electric vehicles and equipment. Another key area of product-market fit for the axial flux motors is hybrid commercial vehicles. The compact design of the motor allows for it to be integrated and packaged easily in hybrid electric vehicles which have tight space constraints.
How do your inverters enhance efficiency and performance in demanding environments?
Turntide’s inverters are designed to enhance efficiency and performance in demanding environments through advanced engineering and adaptability. For instance, the Gen 4 Series is compact and scalable for low-voltage applications, making it ideal for two- and three-wheel vehicles, which are prevalent in India. This series ensures reliability and seamless integration across different platforms.
The Gen 5 Series is designed for hybrid and electric vehicles operating at 350 VDC with up to 400 A of peak current. It offers robust performance with advanced flux vector motor control. Furthermore, the Gen 6 Series covers a wide voltage range (48 V to 800 V) and features high power density and streamlined design.
How do you see the evolving regulatory and cybersecurity requirements?
The first wave of electrification has focussed on lower voltage end of the market. As the market matures, there will be a move to higher voltage solutions coupled with more advanced regulatory compliance requirement around functional safety. Turntide’s inverter platforms have been architected with functional safety capabilities built-in. We are also having an active roadmap which is looking at incorporating cybersecurity compliance in our Inverters.
Is the company also looking for some M&As or strategic partnerships in India?
Turntide Technologies is continually evaluating strategic opportunities to enhance its presence and capabilities in the Indian market. While the company is focused on expanding its operations and partnerships, it remains open to exploring different growth strategies that align with its long-term goals.
Turntide Technologies operates across multiple segments— motors, power electronics, energy storage, and thermal solutions. Which of these is the most profi table, and could you share the approximate contribution of each segment to the overall business?
Turntide’s overall financial performance is robust, with our motors, power electronics and energy storage being the core contributors to our revenue and profitability. In India, our focus is on the two technology categories, power electronics and axial flux motors, that are the ideal fit for the electrification direction in the country, namely two- and three-wheel vehicles and commercial trucks. These technologies can help OEMs improve efficiency, increase control, and reduce maintenance.
