TVS recalls iQube e-scooters
This inspection and rectification initiative is a precautionary measure.
TVS Motor has announced a voluntary recall of its popular iQube electric scooter. The recall pertains to units manufactured between July 10, 2023 and September 09, 2023.
The company has not revealed how many units are affected, but sales figures in that period last year show that about 45,000 units were sold in the three-month period from August to October 2023.
TVS says that it will connect with the concerned customers either directly or through its dealers. “The inspection and any necessary rectifications will be carried out swiftly to minimise inconvenience to customers. We will organise appointments in a phased manner for conducting the inspection. We will work with the customer to schedule appointments, service the vehicle quickly and return the next day.”
As for the corrective measures required, the component itself is replaceable, but we are told that this will be a vehicle specific exercise. While TVS believes that most scooters will only need a part replacement, it will carry out an entire chassis replacement if necessary. This exercise will be at no cost to the customer.
While the wording in TVS’s release states that this is “to ensure that the vehicle's ride handling is good over extended usage”, this step is likely related to a recent video that was widely shared online of a TVS iQube with a broken chassis. This recall only affects a certain batch of scooters, which suggests that it is likely down to a faulty batch of components rather than an inherent design flaw in the product. It is also a positive sign to see the company announce the recall soon after the issue has come to light and take the necessary corrective measures.
