Turno and ThunderPlus Partner to Build 1 MW EV Charging Network on Indian Highways
The strategic alliance aims to install ultra-fast charging infrastructure along major routes, beginning with the Hyderabad-Vizag corridor, to support electric buses and commercial vehicles while addressing range anxiety concerns.
Turno and ThunderPlus have formed a strategic partnership to deploy 1 megawatt ultra-fast charging stations along major Indian highways, beginning with the Hyderabad to Vizag route. The collaboration aims to address range anxiety issues and accelerate the adoption of electric buses and heavy commercial vehicles.
The initiative is part of ThunderPlus' 'One District, One Thunder' program, which seeks to ensure every district in India has at least one high-powered charging station, with priority given to locations along national and state highways.
"While these charging stations are primarily designed for electric bus operations, they will also function as semi-public charging hubs. This partnership eliminates charging anxiety and paves the way for faster EV adoption across India," said Rajeev YSR, CEO of ThunderPlus.
Sudhindra Reddy, Founder of Electrigo, a wholly owned subsidiary of Turno, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: "Through this collaboration, Electrigo aims to replace 10 crore bus kilometers of diesel consumption with electric by the end of 2026, marking a significant step towards a cleaner, more sustainable future."
The impact is already visible with operational charging stations in Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Vizag, and Rajahmundry. The partnership plans to expand to other key highways soon.
India's electric vehicle market has been growing steadily in recent years, though the commercial segment has faced challenges due to limited charging infrastructure, especially for long-distance travel. According to industry reports, commercial EVs require more powerful charging solutions than personal vehicles due to their larger battery capacities and operational demands.
The 1 MW charging technology represents a significant advancement over standard chargers, potentially reducing charging times from hours to minutes for large commercial vehicles. This development comes as India pushes toward its goal of reducing carbon emissions and decreasing dependency on fossil fuels in the transportation sector.
ThunderPlus specializes in EV charging infrastructure development, while Turno focuses on commercial EV adoption through its subsidiary Electrigo, which provides electrification solutions for large vehicle segments.
