After updating the bigger Speed Twin 1200 last month, Triumph has now updated the Speed Twin 900. Unlike the 1200s, the 900’s update doesn’t see any changes to the engine and is focused around the design and feature-set of the bike.
The big change on the Speed Twin 900 is in how the bike looks, with the 900 aping the sleeker design language of the bigger 1200s now. Just like the 1200s, the 900 also gets a full-LED headlight now along with shorter fenders and a minimalistic tail-light. The Speed Twin 900 can be had in three colours – white, silver and black – with over 120 accessories available straight from Triumph’s catalogue.
The main mechanical change is the addition of a non-adjustable Marzocchi USD fork, which replaces the gaitered telescopic unit on the outgoing bike. Marzocchi also supplies the twin rear shock absorbers. The axial Brembo caliper and 310mm front disc have made way for a larger 320mm disc and a Triumph-branded radial caliper. Tyre sizes are the same as before at 100/90-18 (front) and 150/70-R17 (rear), but the compound has been changed to Michelin Road Classic tyres.
The Speed Twin 900’s seat height has now risen to 780mm (up from 765mm), but with the accessory low seat, you can drop it to 760mm. Gone is the single-pod digi-analogue display, being replaced by the same TFT unit seen on the bigger 1200 models. The switchgear, too, is shared with the bigger Speed Twin models.
The electronics suite includes Road and Rain riding modes along with cornering ABS and traction control. What is also carried forward is the liquid-cooled, 900cc, parallel-twin that makes 65hp at 7,500rpm and 80Nm of torque at 3,800rpm. The 900 still gets a 5-speed gearbox compared to the 1200’s 6-speed unit, and you can option it with cruise control and heated grips.
International prices aren’t out yet but the current Speed Twin 900 is priced at GBP 8,795 (Rs 8.49 lakh in India). It remains to be seen by how much Triumph increases the price of its most affordable model in the modern classic line-up.
