One of India's leading automobile manufacturers, Tata Motors today unveiled its new sport utility vehicle Sierra and the electric variant of Harrier at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. However, the automaker did not disclose the prices or give the launch timeline of both the models. The automaker also showcased the concept model of its luxury passenger vehicle AvinyaX.
The company will offer Sierra in petrol, diesel and electric powertrains. Meanwhile the Harrier.ev will come with advanced driver assistance system called ‘Summon Mode’. However, Tata Motors did not disclose the battery, driving range and motor specification for Harrier.ev. AvinyaX will cater to the luxury segment and will come with advanced powertrain options.
In future, Tata Motors also plans to set up a network of 500 electric vehicle charging stations in India to drive adoption of electric vehicles, according to Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility.
Tata Motors is the largest electric passenger vehicle manufacturer in India. The company has sold over 2 million electric cars so far. However, it has been losing market share to other automaker with the introduction of new electric vehicles in India. Tata Motors market share dropped to 62% in 2024, from 73% in the year-ago period. In 2025, the competition in this segment is expected to heat up further, with the top five automakers in India expected to expand their electric passenger vehicle portfolio.
Maruti Suzuki India today unveiled its first electric passenger vehicle ‘e Vitara’, and Hyundai launched Creta Electric. Similarly, in November, Mahindra & Mahindra launched its Born Electric vehicles, BE 6 and XEV 9e. However, to regain lost market share, Tata Motors plans to launch at least 10 EVs by 2026, which may lead to USD 2 billion investment.
In 2024, electric car sales were up 20% on year at 99,068 units. Topping the list, Tata Motors sold 61,435 units. Other OEMs that aced the 2024 EV sales are JSW Motors with 21,464 units, Mahindra and Mahindra at 7,104 units, and BYD India at 2,819 units.
The EV penetration in India still hovers around 2.5%. The high upfront cost of EVs, combined with concerns about driving range and the limited charging infrastructure, continues to slow adoption.
