Tata Motors, India’s leading automobile manufacturer has launched a Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF) in Chandigarh, making this the fourth Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility. Named 'Re.Wi.Re – Recycle with Respect,' the facility was unveiled by Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility.
The company has three Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facilities in Jaipur, Bhubaneshwar and Surat.
The facility uses environmentally friendly processes and has the capacity to disassemble 12,000 end-of-life vehicles safely and sustainably, each year, as per the press release.
The RVSF is developed and operated by Tata Motors’ partner Dada Trading Company and is equipped to scrap both passenger and commercial vehicles, regardless of their brand.

A cutting-edge facility, Re.Wi.Re. is purpose-built for dismantling end-of-life passenger and commercial vehicles across all brands, with a focus on employing environmentally friendly practices. The fully digitalised facility is equipped with dedicated cell-type and line-type dismantling for commercial vehicles and passenger vehicles, respectively, and all its operations are seamless and paperless.
Additionally, there are dedicated stations for the safe dismantling of various components, including tyres, batteries, fuel, oils, liquids and gases. Every vehicle undergoes a meticulous documentation and dismantling process specifically designed to meet the requirements of passenger and commercial vehicles. By doing so, the dismantling process ensures maximum attention to detail, guaranteeing the safe disposal of all components and as per the vehicle scrappage policy.
The Indian government estimates that India has 51 lakh light motor vehicles that are older than 20 years and another 34 lakh which are older than 15 years. There are around 17 lakh Medium and Heavy Commercial Vehicles (M&HCVs) older than 15 years without a valid fitness certificate. The vehicle scrappage ecosystem is expected to attract additional investments of around Rs 10,000 crore and 35,000 job opportunities, government estimates suggest.
The Centre's vehicle scrapping policy, which was announced in early 2021, envisages that the vehicle owner will get approximately 4-6 percent discount on the ex-showroom price on the purchase of a new vehicle, in addition to getting a discount of up to 25 percent and 15 percent on the road tax of personal vehicles and commercial vehicles, respectively.
Apart from Tata Motors, Mahindra and Maruti Suzuki Toyotsu also run scrapping facilities in India.
