Tata Motors Eyes Software-Defined Vehicles, AI and Alt Fuels to Lead Future of CVs: Girish Wagh

Tata Motors is laying the foundation for a future defined by intelligent, connected, and software-driven commercial vehicles. Girish Wagh, Executive Director and Head of Commercial Vehicles at Tata Motors, said the company is actively building capabilities in Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs) and investing in artificial intelligence (AI) and alternate fuel technologies.

“We are keenly exploring the opportunities in Software Defined Vehicles, including the enabling vehicle architecture and technology stack, to address India-specific market and customer requirements,” Wagh stated in the company’s annual report.

The shift toward SDVs is supported by the company’s robust digital infrastructure and a growing portfolio of AI-led initiatives. “The digital foundations laid over the past years are now enabling us to adopt AI-led transformations — both in customer-facing solutions and internal operations,” he said.

According to Wagh, Tata Motors is already piloting several AI-based use cases, including predictive maintenance, real-time fleet insights, intelligent CRM tools, and personalisation in sales journeys. “These steps will help us offer differentiated value, sharpen our responsiveness, and elevate user experience,” he added.

The company has also advanced its Enterprise Digital programme, integrating Industry 4.0 tools in manufacturing, digitising the supply chain, and modernising sales through digital platforms like E Guru. “This has led to significant improvement in our delivery performance and overall efficiency,” Wagh noted.

Multi-Fuel Strategy with a Hydrogen Milestone

Complementing the company’s digital transformation is a strong push into clean mobility, including EVs, CNG, LNG, and hydrogen. This year's key highlight was unveiling India’s first Hydrogen-powered Internal Combustion Engine (H2ICE) truck, underscoring Tata Motors’ attempt to retain leadership in the alternative powertrain space.

“Innovation remains central to our purpose. This year, we proudly unveiled India’s first Hydrogen-powered Internal Combustion Engine (H2ICE) truck — a significant milestone in our alternate fuel roadmap,” Wagh said.

He added that Tata Motors has been investing ahead of time in EV hardware aggregates and control software to improve performance and efficiency across its upcoming electric vehicle lineup. “We continue to invest in clean mobility across EVs, CNG, LNG, and hydrogen, ensuring our customers have access to a range of sustainable choices.”

The company’s Smart City Mobility portfolio has now deployed over 3,600 electric buses, which have clocked more than 30 crore kilometres with over 95% uptime. Wagh said Tata Motors is also making measurable progress toward its long-term sustainability targets. “With Renewable Electricity now powering over 45% of our CV Operations and Scope 3 emissions down 12% year on year, we are well on track toward our Net Zero and RE100 goals.”

As the commercial vehicle landscape evolves rapidly toward intelligent, low-emission solutions, Tata Motors is aligning its product strategy and digital backbone to stay ahead of the curve — with SDVs, AI, and alternate powertrains at the heart of its transformation agenda.
