Sunjay Kapur, Chairman of Sona Comstar, died of a heart attack in the UK at the age of 53, sending shockwaves through the Indian automotive industry.

According to sources, Kapur was playing polo, a sport he dearly loved, when a bee flew into his mouth, triggering complications that led to a cardiac arrest.

In March 2025, Kapur was appointed Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Northern Region for the 2025–26 term. He had also served as President of the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA), and was a board member at The Doon School, his alma mater in Dehradun.

Sona Comstar issued the following statement on the incident:

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the untimely passing of Mr. Sunjay J Kapur, Chairman and Non-Executive Director of Sona Comstar, following a sudden heart attack in England, UK, on 12th June 2025, at the age of 53.

A visionary leader, Mr. Kapur played a pivotal role in shaping Sona Comstar into a global mobility technology company built on innovation, sustainability, and purpose. His passion, foresight, and relentless commitment to excellence inspired everyone who had the privilege of working with him.

Further details regarding memorial arrangements will be shared in due course.

A vocal proponent of electric mobility, Kapur had expressed strong confidence in India’s EV transition. In a previous interview with Autocar Professional, he had said, “While we are very careful about the investments that we make, we will continue to invest into EV-specific aspects of our business as per the requirements of our customers. We see a big future in electric mobility. We have earmarked an investment in the region of Rs 1,000 crore to Rs 1,200 crore over the next three years, and we will meet our targets.”

Founded in 1995 and headquartered in Gurugram, Sona Comstar operates manufacturing and R&D facilities across India, the US, Serbia, Mexico, and China. The company is a key supplier to the global electric vehicle industry.
