Schaeffler India poised to lead two-wheeler market evolution with localisation and innovation amidst premiumisation and electrification trends.

Schaeffler India is strengthening its presence in the two- and three-wheeler segments, leveraging its existing capabilities in internal combustion engine (ICE) components and its recent expansion into electric powertrain solutions through the Vitesco Technologies acquisition. The company sees significant opportunities as the Indian market transitions to higher-capacity motorcycles and electrification.

Schaeffler India is strengthening its presence in the two- and three-wheeler segments, leveraging its existing capabilities in internal combustion engine (ICE) components and its recent expansion into electric powertrain solutions through the Vitesco Technologies acquisition. The company sees significant opportunities as the Indian market transitions to higher-capacity motorcycles and electrification.
“We already have a strong presence in the ICE two-wheeler segment, supplying a range of bearings and one-way clutches. Now, we are developing wet clutches for higher CC (cubic capacity) motorcycles as the Indian market shifts towards 400cc and above,” said Harsha Kadam, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Schaeffler India.
While Schaeffler had been evaluating its entry into the two-wheeler EV market, the Vitesco merger has given it a strategic advantage. “Vitesco is already strong in electric two-wheeler applications, with expertise in sensors and electronics for both ICE and EVs. This is a force multiplier for us,” Kadam noted.
The acquisition also gave Schaeffler access to critical components, including ECUs, knock sensors, and integrated powertrain solutions. “Earlier, we were not making ECUs. With Vitesco’s capabilities, we have access to their designs, including motor controllers, gearboxes, and power electronics—all as a complete package,” he added.
Schaeffler is positioned to cater to multiple segments in both ICE and EV categories, from two-wheelers to three- and four-wheelers. “While we have been winning business in the passenger car EV segment, the two-wheeler space is now ready. We are now equipped to deliver solutions across the spectrum,” Kadam emphasised.
As India’s two-wheeler market continues to evolve towards premiumisation and electrification, Schaeffler is set to play a key role in shaping the future of mobility, backed by localisation, innovation, and its newly integrated portfolio.
In 2024, a total of 19.54 million two-wheelers, 728,670 three-wheelers, and 4.27 million passenger vehicles were sold in India, as per data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturer of India. In two-wheelers, the sales of above 125 cc products continued to grow at a faster pace than the entry-level segment.
Similarly, in the passenger vehicle category, while dispatches of utility vehicles grew by 17% on year, those of small cars fell in double digits. During the year, the electric vehicle sales also showed robust growth with annual sales climbing 27% to exceed 2 million units.
Meanwhile, at EICMA 2024, the German components and mobility major exhibited its new portfolio of products for two-wheelers. The company showcased everything: from chainless drives for e-bikes to low-voltage electric scooters and side-by-side vehicles, from components for motorcycles with efficient combustion engine technology, to bearing and sealing solutions. It also premiered a hybrid scooter concept that it developed in partnership with scooter manufacturer Kymco.
