M&M Aims to Sell Over 1.2 Lakh EVs per Year by 2027, Says Rajesh Jejurikar

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd expects to clock electric vehicle sales in excess of 1.2 lakh units per year by 2027, with the EV segment likely to contribute to 20-30% of its overall auto volumes, said Rajesh Jejurikar, executive director and chief executive officer, of M&M's auto and farm divisions. The automaker is preparing for an output of 5,000 EVs per month in the initial phase of the launch of its electric origin sport utility vehicles XEV 9e and BE 6.

“On the build up of the electric portfolio, we will start with 5,000 units a month. By 2027, 20% to 30% of our volumes will come from electrics and that is in a range of 120,000 to 200,000 per annum volume,” Jejurikar said at a press conference post the company's Oct-Dec financial results announcement.

Mahindra will start bookings for its complete lineup of XEV 9e and BE 6 on February 14, through 250 plus dealer outlets and its official website. The phased delivery schedule for the models is set to begin mid-March 2025 with pack three variants, while other packs will be delivered between June and August 2025.

Ahead of the opening of bookings for its EVs built on the INGLO (Intelligent Electric Global) architecture, the Mumbai-based automaker has upgraded its showrooms. It has also hired over 500 people across the country with experience in selling luxury premium brands. On top of this dealers have added over 700-800 people to educate potential buyers about the tech in electric origin SUVs, through test drives, according to Jejurikar.

Prepping for the demand for its electric origin SUVs, Mahindra has also upgraded service centres. “Of course, these are connected vehicles and a lot of the updates will happen over the air as we go along, and there are onboard diagnostics and all of that. So, we needed to strengthen the service team to enable that as well,” Jejurikar said.

Mahindra launched the first two of its 'Born Electric' SUVs in November. While the BE 6 is available at a starting price of ₹18.90 lakh, and the XEV 9e, priced from ₹21.90 lakh.In terms of performance, both models offer two battery options: 79 kWh and 59 kWh LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries. The 79 kWh variant delivers a certified range of 682 km for the BE 6 and 656 km for the XEV 9e -- among the highest in India. The 3-in-1 integrated powertrain produces up to 210 kW power and 380 Nm of instant torque. It also offers a fast charging option, with 20-80% charging possible in under 20 minutes using a 175 kW fast charger.

The company will manufacture its XEV 9e and BE 6 at its new facility in Chakan, Pune. It is creating a production capacity of 90,000 units per annum, which could be further scaled up to 1.2 lakh units per annum. Mahindra’s first two born electric vehicles will compete with Maruti Suzuki India’s eVitara, Hyundai Motor India’s Creta electric, JSW MG Motor India’s ZS EV, some BYD models, and Tata Motors upcoming Harrier EV.

In 2024, sales of electric passenger vehicles in India rose 20% year-on-year to 99,290 units. Tata Motors, JSW MG Motor and Mahindra & Mahindra contributed over 90% of industry sales. In 2025,  the competition in the electric car space in the country is expected to reach a crescendo, with both the government and automakers doubling down on their strategies to drive adoption.
