JSW MG Motor India announces the MG Windsor, India's first Intelligent Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV), has reached a production milestone of 15,000 units. The vehicle has maintained its position as the best-selling electric vehicle in India for four consecutive months from October 2024 through January 2025, contributing significantly to the overall growth of India's electric vehicle market.
Biju Balendran, Deputy Managing Director of JSW MG Motor India, stated, "We are delighted with the response that the MG Windsor has been receiving and are grateful to our customers who have helped us cross the 15,000-unit production milestone. The CUV has been widely accepted by car buyers for its overall pricing and packaging, and for offering a luxurious business-class experience to customers.
“Smart initiatives such as BaaS, the buyback program, and a lifetime warranty, have all boosted consumer confidence in EVs. As we diversify our portfolio, we remain committed to bringing quality products to our customers at a faster rate," he added.
The company is expanding production capacity at its Halol facility to meet the increasing demand for the Windsor model. However, Balendran noted that facility modifications required for upcoming product launches may cause a temporary production slowdown in February 2025, potentially affecting wholesale figures during this period.
Looking ahead, JSW MG Motor India anticipates to diversify its product lineup with two new vehicles: the MG Cyberster and MG M9. These models will be introduced under the company's new premium sub-brand, "MG Select," which focuses on delivering "accessible luxury" to the Indian market. Both vehicles are scheduled to launch in the first half of 2025.
The electric vehicle (EV) market in India is experiencing significant growth due to increasing demand for environmentally friendly transportation options. JSW MG Motor India has been a key player in this market, contributing to the growth with its innovative vehicles.
JSW MG Motor has seen considerable success with the Windsor, likely due to a confluence of factors. The availability of the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) program likely played a significant role in the Windsor's popularity. By lowering the upfront cost of the vehicle, BaaS makes EV ownership more accessible to a wider range of consumers. This innovative approach to battery ownership could be a key differentiator for MG in the competitive EV market.
The car is available at just Rs 9.99 lakh -- the starting ex-showroom price without the battery. In addition, the consumer has to pay ₹3.9 per km, based on the distance you drive each month.
It is also positioned as India's first intelligent CUV, and has a somewhat spacious design for the category.
