India’s largest car maker, Maruti Suzuki posted a 10.4% growth in November wholesales on a year-on-year basis. Robust rural demand and the ongoing marriage season supported the sales during the month. The company’s domestic passenger vehicle sales rose around 5% while its total domestic sales, including commercial vehicles, exports and those to Toyota Kirloskar, registered 8% growth.
The automaker dispatched a total of 181,531 vehicles from its factories during the month, compared with 164,439 in November 2023. Tota domestic dispatches increased to 152,898 units from 141,489 units. Maruti Suzuki’s domestic passenger vehicle dispatches rose to 141,312 units from 134,158 units in the year-ago period.
The company attributed robust sales to a combination of factors including the continued momentum from October, ongoing rural demand, wedding season and increased sales of SUVs, good response for limited edition models. Baleno is the company’s top-selling model, which clocked 25.7% on-year growth during the month to 16,293 units, followed by Ertiga at 15,150 units and Fronx at 14,882 units.
The sports utility segment continued to be the growth driver with the company’s domestic utility vehicle segment, models such as the Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, and XL6, recording 20% growth with 59,003 units sold. SUVs’ contribution has now gone up to around 29%.
The newly launched Dzire has 30,000 cumulative bookings, with 5,000 units already delivered. Its top two variants accounted for 50% of the bookings. The model has been receiving approximately 1,000 bookings per day, which is twice the number seen with its previous generation.
In the domestic market, mini-segment sales, comprising the Alto and S-Presso models in November were at 9,750 units, slightly lower than 9,959 units in the year-ago period. The compact segment, which includes models like the Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, and WagonR, registered sales of 61,373 units, down from 64,679 units in the same period last year. Together, the mini and compact segments saw sales of 71,123 units, down from 74,638 units.
The automaker dispatched 597 units of the Ciaz sedan, compared with 278 units in November 2023. The Eeco van sales also grew to 10,589 units from 10,226 units. Sales of light commercial vehicle Super Carry came in at 144,238 units, against 136,667 units. Sales to Toyota Kirloskar jumped to 8,660 units from 4,822 units.
On the export side, Maruti Suzuki dispatched 28,633 units, up from 22,950 units in the same month last year. This aligns with the company’s export expansion strategy, which recently achieved a milestone of 3 million cumulative vehicle exports.
Maruti Suzuki aims to expand its exports to 750,000 units by 2030 as part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Between April and October 2024, exports grew by 17.4%, with 181,444 units shipped to nearly 100 countries.
Its CNG vehicle sales in November reached approximately 50,000 units. From April to November, CNG sales crossed the 4-lakh mark, a 23.5% increase from the same period last year, contributing 34.4% to MSIL’s overall sales. By the end of the financial year, the company expects to exceed 6 lakh CNG vehicle sales.
