Lexus, the luxury vehicle division of Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation, has announced its targets for Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) in the coming years. The company aims to offer a full lineup of BEVs in all categories by 2030 and to sell 100% BEVs globally by 2035. This initiative is part of Lexus' broader goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
Founded in 1989, Lexus has established itself as a global luxury automotive brand known for its commitment to design, craftsmanship, and performance. Toyota, the parent company of Lexus, is one of the world's largest automakers and has been investing heavily in alternate fuel technologies, but has focused more on hybrids.
Toyota is perhaps best known for coming up with the first mass-produced hybrid car, the Prius, in 1997. Since then, the company has sold over 15 million hybrid vehicles worldwide, contributing to significant reductions in CO2 emissions. Toyota's hybrid technology, known as the Toyota Hybrid System (THS), has been continuously refined over the years and is now available in a wide range of Toyota and Lexus models.
Toyota has also been a pioneer in the development of FCEVs, which use hydrogen as a fuel source and emit only water as a byproduct. The company introduced the world's first mass-produced FCEV, the Toyota Mirai, in 2014.
More recently, Toyota has been expanding its efforts in the development of BEVs and FCEVs. In 2020, the company announced its "Environmental Challenge 2050," which includes targets for reducing CO2 emissions and achieving carbon neutrality. As part of this initiative, Toyota plans to introduce 15 BEV models by 2025 and to sell 5.5 million electrified vehicles (including HEVs, PHEVs, BEVs, and FCEVs) annually by 2030.
Lexus said it has been incorporating eco-friendly technologies and materials into its vehicles, such as high-recovery materials and recycled plastics. Lexus India sid it has implemented plantation and mass afforestation activities, with over 328,000 plants across its premises.
Meanwhile, the global electric vehicle market has been growing rapidly in recent years, driven by increasing consumer awareness, government incentives, and advancements in battery technology. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the global electric vehicle fleet is expected to reach 145 million by 2030, accounting for about 7% of the global vehicle fleet.
Lexus' plans to have a complete electric lineup by 2030 positions the company to compete in this growing market. However, the company will face competition from other luxury automakers such as Tesla, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, which have already introduced electric vehicle models.
In India, where Lexus has been present since 2017, the government has set a target of achieving 30% electric vehicle sales by 2030. Lexus India's Executive Vice President, Tanmay Bhattacharya, stated that the company recognizes its responsibility to preserve and protect the environment and will continue its efforts to lead the industry towards sustainable mobility solutions.
Lexus' plans for a full BEV lineup by 2030 and 100% BEV sales by 2035 are part of a broader trend in the automotive industry towards electrification. As governments around the world implement stricter emissions regulations and consumers become more environmentally conscious, automakers are investing heavily in electric vehicle technology.
