Kia Corporation unveiled its new PV5 at the 2025 Kia EV Day in Tarragona, Spain on February 28, 2025. The mid-sized Car Derived Van (CDV) is the first production model in Kia's Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) global business strategy, designed to redefine space and mobility through innovative modular architecture that provides flexible usage options for both business and personal applications.
The PV5 is built on Kia's E-GMP.S platform, a battery-electric skateboard architecture that enables various body configurations. At launch, three main variants will be available: Passenger, Cargo, and Chassis Cab, with further specialized conversion models planned.
"By integrating the clean efficiency of an electric powertrain with the unprecedented flexibility of our new PBV architecture and advancing our product, software, and manufacturing innovations, the PV5 embodies our core values as a sustainable mobility solutions provider," said Ho Sung Song, President and CEO at Kia.
Kia's PBV strategy centers around three areas of innovation: product, manufacturing, and software. The E-GMP.S platform employs Integrated Modular Architecture (IMA), standardizing components like batteries and motors to streamline development and reduce costs.
The company's Flexible Body System allows modular assembly of body components to address diverse customer needs through standard models (Passenger, Cargo, Chassis-Cab, Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle, and Family) and conversion variants (Crew, Drop Side, Box Van, Freezer Box, Prime, and Light Camper).
Manufacturing takes place at a dedicated "EVO Plant" using both conveyor and cell-based systems. Kia also plans a conversion center for customized production, with all vehicles backed by Kia's warranty.
On the software front, the PV5 features an Android Automotive Operating System-based infotainment system to improve usability for business partners. A collaboration with Samsung Electronics extends Samsung's SmartThings Pro IoT platform to Kia PBVs, connecting vehicles to workplace IoT ecosystems.
The PV5 Passenger offers a three-row seat configuration with multiple layout options. The 2-3-0 layout uses the first and second rows for seating with the third row as a luggage area, while a 1-2-3 configuration provides storage space beside the driver. Kia collaborated with Uber during development to address ride-sharing requirements.
The PV5 Cargo comes in Standard, Long, and High-roof specifications, offering up to 5.1 m³ cargo capacity—enough for two Euro pallets. Its low cargo room step height (419mm) minimizes loading effort. An optional L-track mounting system provides flexible cargo securing, while Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality supplies power for tools and equipment.
The PV5 Chassis Cab serves as a platform for conversions ranging from Drop Side to Freezer Box configurations. It features a flat rear structure with side collision protection for the battery and mounting brackets for cargo body installations.
Additional specialized variants include the PV5 Crew with integrated cargo securing options and the PV5 Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV), which features side-entry access and a universal wheelchair belt fastening system.
All PV5 variants offer a choice of 51.5 kWh or 71.2 kWh NCM batteries, with the Cargo version also available with a 43.3 kWh LFP battery. Power comes from a 120 kW front motor producing 250 Nm of torque.
The PV5 employs a cell-to-pack battery system that improves energy efficiency by eliminating modules. When equipped with the 71.2 kWh battery, the Passenger variant achieves up to 400 km range, with fast-charging capability from 10% to 80% in 30 minutes.
Inspired by Kia's "Opposites United" design philosophy, the PV5 combines a sleek upper body with a robust lower section. Signature lighting integrates with the A-pillar, while black geometric wheel arch claddings and interchangeable bumper corners enhance both aesthetics and functionality.
The interior features colors inspired by nature include: Deep Navy, Dove Gray, Espresso Brown, Terracotta Brown, and Iceberg Green. Exterior color options include Soft Mint Gloss, Lakehouse Gray Gloss, Frost Blue Gloss, and Steel Gray Matte (Korean market only).
The cabin employs an open-box concept with modular storage solutions, including Kia's AddGear system that allows for easy customization with accessories. Technology features include a 7-inch instrument cluster, 12.9-inch navigation screen, Digital Key 2.0, and over-the-air update capability.
Kia will begin PV5 sales in Korea and Europe in the second half of 2025, followed by other markets in 2026. Conversion models will enter production sequentially between 2025 and 2026, with pre-orders expected to commence in the first half of 2025 for Korean and European markets.
