In May 2024, Autocar India exclusively reported that Kawasaki would launch a locally manufactured version of the KLX 230 S dual sport motorcycle. Now we can build on the same and report that this bike is set to launch in India in October 2024 and is expected to have a very tempting price.

Recent spy images from July revealed that the KLX 230 S being localised for India is the 2024 model, which is slightly more capable than its predecessor. But even so, the KLX 230 S is Kawasaki's idea of a new rider-friendly dual-sport motorcycle, featuring less suspension travel and a lower seat height compared to typical dual-sport machines.

Going by specifications on international websites, the Kawasaki KLX 230 S has an 843mm seat height, 239mm of ground clearance, and 198mm/220mm of suspension travel. Crucially, the US website lists the weight at 133kg, but that number should creep closer to the 140kg mark once emission and other Indian regulatory needs, such as a front number plate and saree guard, are met. That will still make the Kawasaki far lighter than the Hero Xpulse, which weighs 159kg.

The KLX 230 uses a simple air-cooled, 2-valve 233cc engine, and expected power figures are somewhere between 17hp-20hp. The bike runs a 5-speed gearbox and this places it neatly against the Xpulse 200, which has similar numbers. However, images of a new Hero Xpulse 210 with the engine from the Karizma XMR have recently emerged. When that bike launches, it will have a significant power advantage over the Kawasaki.
This bike will be BS6 and E20 compliant, and it will also have ABS. The KLX 230 S will be the third localised model in Kawasaki’s line-up, following the Ninja 300 and W175. It will be interesting to see how much localised content the bike incorporates.

Kawasaki aims to position this motorcycle aggressively, with a price tag of around Rs 2 lakh (ex-showroom, India), or possibly even lower. When it goes on sale, the KLX 230 S will be an authentic, lightweight, dual-sport motorcycle and the first road-legal Japanese model of its kind in India.
