JBM Electric Vehicles has partnered with Hitachi ZeroCarbon to integrate advanced battery management technology into its electric bus fleet, the companies announced Wednesday in New Delhi.
The collaboration will deploy Hitachi's ZeroCarbon BatteryManager system in JBM's electric buses to collect real-time data and provide actionable insights on charging patterns, route optimization, and asset usage. The partnership specifically targets performance improvements in varying climate conditions across India and the Middle East.
"This collaboration with Hitachi ZeroCarbon will ensure critical parameters for enhancing our battery performance proactively for each customer under different climatic conditions," said Nishant Arya, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of JBM Auto Ltd. He added that the technology would help increase the residual value of batteries and improve the total cost of ownership for public transport operators.
Ram Ramachander, CEO of Hitachi ZeroCarbon, described the initiative as "landmark" for their BatteryManager solution, noting that India's diverse climate makes it "an ideal showcase" for how the technology can help fleet operators navigate operational constraints in different terrains and weather conditions.
The partnership comes as India continues pushing for cleaner public transportation options. JBM's electric buses, introduced in 2018, have reportedly traveled over 150 million electric kilometers and served 1 billion commuters globally. The company operates what it describes as the world's largest dedicated electric bus manufacturing facility outside China, with a capacity to produce 20,000 buses annually.
Hitachi has maintained a presence in India since the 1930s and currently operates approximately 28 group companies in the country with a workforce of over 39,000 employees. The company has historically supplied various technologies to India, including early exports of table fans and steam engines.
The electric bus market in India has seen significant growth in recent years as cities work to reduce air pollution and meet climate goals. Government initiatives like the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme have provided subsidies to support electric vehicle adoption, including public transport fleets.
Battery management remains a key challenge for electric vehicle operations in India, where temperatures can range from near freezing to extreme heat depending on region and season. Optimizing battery performance under these conditions is essential for maintaining vehicle range and extending battery life, factors that significantly impact the economic viability of electric bus operations.
