India’s manufacturing sector has achieved a production output of ₹14 lakh crore and exports worth ₹5.3 lakh crore, according to Amardeep Singh Bhatia, Secretary, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). Speaking at the 20th CII Manufacturing Summit, Bhatia noted that this growth has resulted in the creation of over 11.5 lakh jobs.
Highlighting the rise in mobile phone exports, which have surpassed ₹1.29 lakh crore since 2014, he stated that while manufacturing exports are increasing, they remain lower than services exports, presenting an opportunity for further expansion.
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) emphasised the need for manufacturing to contribute 25% of India’s GDP, compared to its current 17%. The summit brought together policymakers, industry leaders, and experts to discuss the sector’s future trajectory.
Jamshyd N Godrej, Chairman and Managing Director, Godrej Enterprises Group, noted that India has long aimed for a 25% GDP contribution from manufacturing, but achieving this target remains a challenge. He pointed out that countries such as Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand have shorter product development cycles, setting benchmarks that India must strive to meet.
Godrej also stressed the importance of inclusive growth, particularly in increasing women’s leadership roles in manufacturing. He stated that while government support plays a role, the sector’s progress will be driven by MSMEs, startups, and corporate leaders fostering innovation.
CII Director General Chandrajit Banerjee remarked that India is at a critical stage in its industrial development. He stated that to transition from a $3.7 trillion economy to a projected $30–35 trillion economy by 2047, manufacturing must play a central role. Achieving this, he said, will require policy reforms, technological advancements, and industry-wide efforts to enhance competitiveness.
Geetanjali Vikram Kirloskar, Chairperson & Managing Director of Kirloskar Systems Ltd, highlighted the importance of a strong supply chain in supporting manufacturing growth. She noted that efficient logistics and supply chain infrastructure are crucial for maintaining competitiveness.
Swati Salgaocar, Chairperson of CII Western Region and President of V M Salgaocar and Brother Pvt Ltd, stated that India’s manufacturing sector is evolving and has the potential to reach its targeted GDP share. She emphasized that success will depend on the adoption of sustainable and technology-driven production models.
Abheek Singhi, Managing Director & Senior Partner at BCG, pointed out that sustainability is becoming a key factor in manufacturing. He highlighted the need for integrating digital technologies and adapting to global geopolitical and environmental considerations.
Concluding the summit, Sunil Chordia, Past Chairman of CII Western Region and Chairman & Managing Director of Rajratan Global Wire Ltd, emphasized the need for actionable steps to strengthen India’s manufacturing ecosystem. He called for collaboration and innovation to build a resilient and competitive sector.
