Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) and Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IndianOil) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on April 22 to assess the viability of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles for mass adoption in India. As part of the agreement, Hyundai has provided one NEXO Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) to IndianOil for conducting real-world testing on Indian roads.

The two-year trial will evaluate the vehicle's longevity and operational reliability over approximately 40,000 kilometers. Both companies will also conduct a Total Cost of Ownership assessment, including maintenance requirements, to determine the economic and environmental benefits of hydrogen-powered vehicles in the Indian market.

"By signing this Memorandum of Understanding with Indian Oil Corporation, we aim to combine world-class hydrogen fuel cell technology with Indian expertise," said Unsoo Kim, Managing Director of HMIL. "Together, we seek to unlock the potential of Green Hydrogen as a transformative energy source."

Dr. Alok Sharma, Director (R&D) and Board Member of IndianOil, emphasized that hydrogen fuel is a vital component of India's clean energy roadmap. "This collaboration with Hyundai Motor India will enable us to conduct in-depth studies in fuel cell technology and advance efforts toward realizing a greener mobility ecosystem," he stated.

This partnership comes amid growing interest in alternative fuel technologies as India works to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and lower carbon emissions. The Indian government has been promoting green hydrogen through its National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched to position the country as a global hub for production and export of green hydrogen.

Hyundai brings significant experience to the partnership, with comprehensive capabilities in various propulsion technologies including internal combustion engines, compressed natural gas, flex-fuel, hybrid, electric, and hydrogen vehicles globally. The company is simultaneously working with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras to develop a 'Hydrogen Innovation Centre' intended to serve as a platform for testing components and quality in green hydrogen technology.

IndianOil, as India's largest integrated oil and gas company, has been investing in various sustainable energy initiatives. The state-owned corporation has been exploring alternative fuel options as part of its strategy to diversify beyond traditional petroleum products and align with global sustainability goals.

The success of this trial could influence the future direction of India's transportation sector, potentially offering a pathway to reduce the country's substantial oil import bill while addressing environmental concerns related to vehicular emissions.
