After hosting the Bharat Mobility Global Expo for two consecutive years, the government will consult the industry associations such as the Society of Automobile Manufacturers and Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India to decide on the frequency of the mega event, whether to hold it annually or biennially.
“We would love to have it annually, but we will be open to suggestions, and discussions from all stakeholders. Because, we would like to create a value proposition for everybody,” Rajesh Agrawal, additional secretary at the Department of Commerce, said while speaking to the media at the conclusion of the second edition of the Bharat Mobility Expo on Wednesday.
Until 2024, the vehicle and component expos were held as two separate events, organized by the SIAM and ACMA, respectively once every two years. However, both shows were converged in 2024 under the umbrella of the Bharat Mobility brand with associations owning their expos and related events as a sub-brand of Bharat Mobility.
The idea of Bharat Mobility Global Expo was put forward by the Ministry of Commerce to showcase India as a mobility hub by bringing the entire mobility ecosystem on one platform, in one exhibition. Major OEMs, component makers and companies from allied sectors, such as batteries, charging, steel and tires, participated in the expo.
After the success of the first edition of Bharat Mobility last year, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said the event will be annual. However, while addressing the media on the final day of the second edition of Bharat Mobility, the secretary did not confirm whether the event will happen next year while saying the government will consult associations on making it an annual event.
Several major auto companies such as Honda Cars, Renault, Nissan, Sona Comstar and Lumax Industries did not participate in the exhibition this year. Globally, auto shows have been losing the charm as the automotive exhibition is a costly marketing affair and many do not see a merit in participating in the event.
However, the government and industry associations said this year’s Bharat Mobility Expo has again turned out to be a huge success with record product launches and footfall. Total footfall at the second edition of Bharat Mobility Expo has been over 9.5 lakh till Wednesday afternoon and close to 200 product launches happened across all the expos, Agarwal said.
SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon said this year’s expo saw the largest-ever participation with over 34 automakers showcasing their products. Around 90 new products were launched or unveiled. “Decarbonisation and sustainability were the focus of the show. Most of the products launched [at the Auto Show] were electric vehicles across all segments,” he said.
At the component show, over 100,000 products were displayed by 1,100 domestic and international exhibitors, attracting more than 75,000 visitors, including key delegations from Japan, the UK, South Korea, Mexico, and Germany. “This was the largest ever component show, spanning 70,000 square meters. It has been a good show with steady footfall from OEMs and aftermarket players,” ACMA Director General Vinnie Mehta said.
Apart from vehicle makers and component makers, the second edition of Bharat Mobility Expo included exhibitions by companies operating in the battery and charging sector, and urban mobility space, bicycle makers and construction equipment companies.
The vehicle show was held from January 17 to January 22 at the Bharat Mandapam in Delhi’s Pragati Maidan, while the component show was held between January 18 and January 21 at Yashobhoomi (India International Convention and Expo Centre) in Delhi. The Bharat Mandapam also hosted tyre show, cycle show and battery show as well as the steel pavilion. The construction equipment show and urban mobility and infrastructure shows were held at the India Expo Centre and Mart in Greater Noida from January 19 to January 22.
