Taiwan-based global tech player in battery swapping, Gogoro, has entered India with its battery swapping pilot. This pilot will enable the last mile delivery fleets to electrify through Gogoro Network Battery Swapping. The company has announced a strategic partnership with Zypp Electric, India's leading EV-as-a-Service platform, to launch a B2B pilot in Delhi in December using Gogoro battery swapping.
Gogoro, which already has an alliance with India’s largest two-wheeler maker Hero MotoCorp and Foxconn for development and sales of swappable battery solutions is open to more partnerships in future to accelerate the transition towards electrification. Globally, Gogoro has tie-ups with 10 different vehicle manufacturers including Yamaha and Suzuki Taiwan.
“The partnership will enable last mile delivery fleets to begin to adopt sustainable energy and transform their businesses for the future,” said Horace Luke, Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Gogoro.
In April last year, the company established a joint venture with Hero MotoCorp for Gogoro’s battery swapping network. There are plans for Hero to develop Gogoro-powered vehicles for the Indian Market.
Highlighting the company's India plans, Luke said the company is open to explore and engage with other OEMs as there is a huge potential for electrification of the mobility sector in the country. “We see our platform as an enabler and want to scale up our engagement with other vehicle manufacturers as well,” he added.
In the international market, Gogoro has partnered with over 10 OEMs including Yamaha and Suzuki Taiwan for its battery swapping modular technology for electric two-vehicles.
The company has partnered with Foxconn to localise battery technology in the country for their swapping network. However, it is also evaluating plans to expand this partnership to electric vehicle manufacturing. “We are teaming up our technology with Foxconn’s manufacturing investments to localise battery technology in India,” the CEO said.
With more than 350 million battery swaps to date, Gogoro is introducing its advanced battery swapping platform in India to establish a new generation of electric two-wheel transportation that is proven, safe, and reliable, Luke added.
According to Kaushik Burman, General Manager of India for Gogoro, the partnership with Zypp is a first step in validating and demonstrating Gogoro's proven leadership in battery swapping while also learning from local businesses and riders. “Gogoro is a founding member of the Indian battery swapping association (IBSA) and we are collaborating with multiple industry partners and regulatory authorities to contribute to a better India. “Gogoro has been working to secure all of the relevant certifications for its batteries and battery swapping stations,” Burman added.
With more than a half million riders and nearly 11,000 battery swapping GoStations at over 2,240 locations, the Gogoro Network hosts more than 3,70,000 daily battery swaps. Till date, the company claims to have completed 350 million battery swaps.
