In a rare occurance for any auto brand in the country, Bajaj Auto sold more two-wheelers outside India in February than it did in its home market.
Export shipments of two-wheelers reached 1.53 lakh compared to 1.46 lakh sold in India during the month.
However, since it continues to sell more three-wheelers (rickshaws) in India than outside, the total number of vehicles sold by the company in India was still higher than exports, at 183,415 vs 168,656 units.
During February 2025, two-wheeler domestic sales fell sharply by 14%, compared to the strong 23% jump seen in exports.
Including three-wheelers, exports surged by 21% year-on-year while domestic sales slumped by 11%, according to data released on March 3.
The stark contrast between international and home market performance has resulted in exports now accounting for nearly 48% of the company's total sales volume of 352,071 units, compared to just 40% in February 2024.
The narrowing gap between domestic and export numbers has been accelerating in recent months, with January also showing strong export growth against falling domestic demand.
This transformation is even more significant considering the full-year trend.
Full Year Numbers
The trend is also visible in full-year numbers.
Year-to-date domestic two-wheeler sales reached 21,24,590 units, showing modest 3% growth compared to 20,67,581 units in the same period last year.
In contrast, two-wheeler exports have surged by 15% to 15,41,987 units from 13,46,457 units.
While domestic sales still lead in absolute numbers, the substantial gap is narrowing as export growth outpaces domestic performance by a factor of five.
This trend highlights Bajaj's strengthening position in international markets, though domestic sales continue to represent approximately 58% of total two-wheeler volume.
Including three-wheelers, total domestic sales across all categories increased by 3% to 25,66,211 units in the year so far, compared to 24,94,330 units in the previous year.
Meanwhile, total exports jumped by 15% to 17,14,932 units from 14,90,699 units.
This has shifted the sales mix significantly, with exports now representing 40% of Bajaj's total volume, up from 37% in the previous year.
