Essar Energy Transition (EET) Hydrogen has signed an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract with ENKA to develop its flagship low-carbon hydrogen production plant (HPP1) at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. The project is expected to play a key role in advancing the UK’s hydrogen industry as part of the HyNet Cluster initiative.
HPP1 will produce 350MW of low-carbon hydrogen annually and capture around 600,000 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to removing approximately 250,000 cars from the road each year. The project was selected for government funding in October 2024, marking it as the UK’s first large-scale low-carbon hydrogen project. The initiative aligns with EET Hydrogen’s target to develop 4GW of hydrogen production capacity to help industrial businesses in North West England decarbonize operations.
ENKA, a global engineering and construction firm based in Istanbul, was selected for the project after a competitive tender process. The company has extensive experience in delivering complex projects worldwide, including the Hinkley Point Power Plant in Somerset and the Shotton Mill Paper Mill Factory in Flintshire.
EET Hydrogen's CEO, Joe Seifert highlighted ENKA’s strong track record in managing large-scale projects and expressed optimism about the partnership’s potential to achieve the company’s low carbon hydrogen production goals. Hakan Kozan, a member of ENKA’s Executive Committee, emphasized the project's importance in contributing to the UK’s decarbonization objectives and fostering sustainable economic growth.
HPP1 is part of the broader HyNet Cluster strategy, which aims to establish a regional hydrogen network and reduce carbon emissions across the UK. The project underscores the collaborative efforts between government, industry, and international partners to accelerate the transition to cleaner energy solutions.
