Several Indian car brands have introduced ‘Black Edition’ variants for their SUVs. With a blacked-out exterior and cabin, these models are targeted at buyers looking for a distinctive look over the standard line-up.

Mahindra Scorpio Classic Boss Edition
The Boss Edition accessory package exclusive to the top Mahindra Scorpio Classic S11 variant is offered as a dealer-level upgrade. The exterior’s chrome trims, like the front grille and fog lamp housing, get the dark effect, further extending to the bonnet scoop, rear quarter glass, headlamps and tail-lamps. The special edition also adds rain visors, a front skid plate, a rear guard with black powder coating and a rearview camera, while the wing mirror caps have a faux carbon-fibre finish.
On the inside, the Boss Edition features black seat upholstery and Mahindra’s Comfort Kit, which introduces cushions and neck pillows in the range-topping Scorpio Classic.
Engine and Transmission
Powering the Scorpio Classic is a 2.2-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine producing 132hp and 300Nm of peak torque. All of this output goes to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual gearbox.
Tata Curvv Dark Edition
The Curvv Dark Edition is the newest addition to Tata’s line-up of blacked-out models. Expectedly, the coupe-SUV is finished in a new Carbon Black colour, with most of the exterior chrome trim eschewed in favour of gloss-black elements, like on the bumpers, grille and window line. It also gets darkened Tata logos and exclusive '#Dark' badging on the fenders.
Much like the exterior, the Curvv Dark Edition’s cabin features an all-black theme for the leatherette seats, 4-spoke steering wheel, centre console and roof liner, as well as ‘#Dark’ embossing on the headrests. Since the Curvv Dark Edition is based on the standard Curvv’s top-spec Accomplished trim, it offers equipment such as ambient lighting, ventilated front seats, wireless charging, a panoramic sunroof, a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 9-speaker JBL sound system, and much more.
Engine and Transmission
The Curvv Dark Edition is a purely cosmetic package, so Tata has not made any changes in terms of powertrain offerings. Powering the Curvv Dark Edition is a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine generating 125hp and 225Nm or a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel unit that’s good for 118hp and 260Nm. Both engines can be mated to a 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Based on the top ZX trim, the Honda Elevate Black Edition comes in a Crystal Black Pearl exterior paint shade with all-black alloy wheels. There’s a silver finish on the doors’ lower part, upper grille and roof rails. In the Signature Black Edition, all the silver bits are darkened out, and ‘Signature Black Edition’ and ‘S’ badges are present around the body.
As for the Elevate’s interior, Honda offers a 7-colour ambient lighting package, along with black seats and dashboard, in the Signature Black trim. Borrowed features from the standard Elevate SUV include a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, leatherette seating, a single-pane sunroof, camera-based ADAS and automatic headlights and wipers.
Engine and Transmission
The blacked-out Elevate comes with the familiar 121hp, 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine mated to either a 6-speed manual or a CVT automatic.
Mahindra Scorpio N Carbon Edition
The new Mahindra Scorpio N Carbon Edition is reserved for the Z8 and Z8L top trims. The dark theme blacks out the otherwise chrome door handles and window side moulding. Also, the black alloy wheels (up to 18 inches) are exclusive to the Carbon Edition.
Inside, everything from the dashboard and leatherette seats to door trims is in line with the pitch-black philosophy. Note that one can have this black Scorpio N top model only in the 7-seat configuration. As for features, an 8-inch touchscreen, a sunroof, drive modes, dual-zone AC, 12 speakers and six airbags are offered.
Engine and transmission
Under the hood, the new Scorpio N variant continues with the 203hp, 2-litre turbo-petrol engine or the 175hp, 2.2-litre diesel engine. Both of these can be had with either a 6-speed manual transmission or an automatic transmission. However, the 4-wheel drive (4WD) option is only available with the 2.2 diesel.
Mahindra XUV700 Ebony Edition
The Mahindra XUV700 Ebony Edition gets a new Stealth Black paint. Other changes over the standard model include blacked-out 18-inch alloy wheels (with an unchanged design) and Ebony badges on the body.
The XUV700 Ebony’s interior has a black theme for the leatherette upholstery, dashboard and door trims. To add some contrast, Mahindra has added silver plastic bits on the steering and dashboard and a light grey roof liner. Since the Ebony Edition is offered with the range-topping AX7 and AX7 L variants, features like a 10.25-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, 6-way electrically adjustable seats and a panoramic sunroof are offered. Mahindra has also added a rear seat belt reminder on all variants of the XUV700 range.
Engine and transmission
Powertrain options with the new XUV700 Ebony Edition are the familiar 200hp, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and the 185hp, 2.2-litre diesel engine, both of which can be had with either a 6-speed manual or an automatic transmission (excluding the XUV700 AX7 L petrol, which only gets an AT). Note that Mahindra exclusively offers this new XUV700 edition in the front-wheel drive (FWD) guise and 7-seat configuration.
MG Hector/ Hector Plus Blackstorm Edition
The MG Hector Blackstorm Edition comes finished in a Starry Black paint and replaces the chrome details with a gun-metal finish along with red accents. This theme extends to the grille, the MG logo and even the lining on the bumpers. The 18-inch alloy wheels and roof rails get a gloss-black finish, while customers can also have a ‘Blackstorm’ emblem on the front fenders at no extra cost.
The all-black treatment is further given with gun-metal trims on the centre console, steering wheel, AC vents and door trims. The black seats and leatherette upholstery with ‘Blackstorm’ embossed on the front headrests confirm the dark credentials of the MG SUV. The MG Hector Plus Blackstorm Edition gets all of the above features but adds the option of 6 or 7 seats. Since these are based on the second-from-top Sharp Pro trim, the feature list comprises a 14-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen, a panoramic sunroof, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless phone charger, push-button engine start/stop and a smart key.
Engine and transmission
The Hector Blackstorm Edition is available with the petrol-CVT and diesel-MT powertrains. That means you get the 143hp, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine mated to a CVT transmission or a 170hp, 2.0-litre diesel engine mated to a 6-speed manual.
Tata Curvv EV Dark Edition
Tata has extended the Dark Edition treatment to the Curvv EV alongside the coupe-SUV’s ICE sibling. The all-electric Curvv’s Dark Edition sports the same Carbon Black paint finish, blacked-out styling flourishes and ‘#Dark’ badges as the ICE version but sets itself apart with unique alloy wheels, a grille-less fascia and a different design for the front bumper.
From the leatherette upholstery to the centre console, nearly every surface in the Curvv EV Dark Edition’s cabin is blacked out. While the Dark Edition is based on the Curvv EV’s range-topping Empowered+ A variant, it notably offers a sunshade for the rear windows in addition to the standard feature list. Other goodies include Level 2 ADAS, ventilated front seats, V2L functionality, a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, 10.25-inch all-digital driver’s display, among other things.
Battery and range
The Curvv EV Dark Edition comes with a 55kWh battery pack that powers a single front-mounted motor. This setup is good for 167hp and 215Nm of torque, as well as an ARAI-tested range of 502km. As far as charging goes, the Curvv EV can be juiced up from 10 to 80 percent in a claimed 40 minutes using 70kW DC fast charging, while a full charge with 7.2kW AC power will take around eight hours.
Tata Harrier Dark and Stealth Editions
While the Stealth Edition is based on the top-spec Harrier Fearless + trim, the Dark Edition is available from Pure + S trim to the top-end one for the Tata Harrier. Also, the Stealth Edition is limited to 2,700 units only. The primary difference between the two black editions is that the Dark uses a gloss-black paint, and the Stealth adds a matte-black finish. A fully black front grille, bumper and skid plate are common exterior features, but the Stealth brings a new design for the alloy wheels and ‘STEALTH’ badging on the fender.
Some chrome touches, like on the door handles, are seen in the Dark SUV’s cabin. The limited edition Stealth goes for an all-black treatment. In terms of features, the top Harrier packs Level 2 ADAS, seven airbags, a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, ventilated seats, a panoramic sunroof, a 10-speaker JBL audio system, connected car tech and dual-zone climate control.
Engine and transmission
The Harrier SUV gets a Stellantis-sourced 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine that makes 170hp and 350Nm and is paired to a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.
Jeep Compass Night Eagle and Blackshark Editions
The Jeep Compass comes in two Black Editions: Night Eagle (Longitude (O) variant) and the higher-spec Blackshark (Limited (O) variant). As with other black SUVs here, the black treatment has been applied to the front grille, roof rails and alloy wheels.
With the Jeep Compass Night Eagle, you get partial leatherette seats, a manual inside rearview mirror (IRVM), two-way electrically adjustable front seats and two airbags. The Jeep Compass Blackshark takes it up a notch with leather seats, auto-dimming IRVM, 6-way electrically adjustable front seats and six airbags. Common features include a panoramic sunroof, a wireless charger, front and rear dashcams, ambient lighting and an air purifier.
Engine and transmission
Both the Compass Night Eagle and Blackshark can be had with a 2.0-litre diesel engine. This unit makes 170hp and 350Nm of peak torque and can be had with either a 6-speed manual transmission or an optional 9-speed torque converter automatic.
Tata Safari Dark and Stealth Editions
The Tata Safari Stealth Edition is offered on the top Accomplished + trim, and the Dark Edition is available from the Pure + S trim. Like the Harrier’s Stealth and Dark Editions, the Safari gets blacked-out trims around the exterior, ranging from the fully black front grille to alloy wheels.
However, only the Safari offers 6- or 7-seat options with additional features over the Harrier. These include heated and cooled cup holders at the front, ventilated front and middle row seats, AC vents on the pillars and captain seats (in 6-seat variants).
Engine and transmission
The 170hp 2.0-litre diesel engine continues to be offered here, alongside a 6-speed manual or a torque converter automatic transmission.
