Battery Smart, an Indian battery-swapping network focused on electric two- and three-wheelers, has been named in the APAC Cleantech 25 list for 2025. The recognition highlights companies across the Asia-Pacific region that are developing scalable and sustainable technologies in sectors such as energy efficiency, battery innovation, and circular economy solutions.
The selection was made following a comprehensive evaluation process based on criteria including innovation, market scalability, partnerships, and investment traction. Battery Smart is one of two Indian companies featured this year.
Founded in 2019 by IIT-Kanpur graduates Pulkit Khurana and Siddharth Sikka, Battery Smart was established to address challenges related to EV adoption in India. The company introduced a battery-swapping model aimed at reducing upfront costs for drivers by eliminating the need to purchase batteries. This approach is designed to make electric mobility more accessible, particularly for cost-conscious users.
The company observed that a significant number of electric rickshaws in India were using lead-acid batteries, which required frequent replacement and lengthy charging times. By offering a subscription-based battery-swapping network, Battery Smart enables drivers to access fully charged batteries on the go, thereby reducing downtime and potentially increasing operational hours.
Battery Smart reports that its services have contributed to higher earning potential for drivers and small business partners. According to company estimates, over ₹750 crores in additional income has been generated for drivers, while partners hosting swapping stations have seen an estimated ₹175 crores in added revenue. The company also states that its network includes a relatively high percentage of female drivers.
The company’s partner-led model has allowed it to expand into Tier 1, 2, and 3 cities by collaborating with small businesses to host battery-swapping points. Currently, Battery Smart facilitates more than 100,000 swaps per day.
On the environmental front, the company reports completing over 68 million swaps since June 2020, which it estimates has saved more than 325,000 tonnes of CO2 and supported over 2.27 billion electric kilometers. These outcomes are aligned with broader national objectives such as reducing reliance on fossil fuels and achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
