Bajaj Auto on Wednesday reported a decline of 1% in its total wholesales in December on a year-on-year basis. Despite a strong uptick in exports, total sales dropped because the automaker’s two-wheeler dispatches to the domestic market plunged 19%.
The Pune-based company dispatched 3.23 lakh two-wheelers and commercial vehicles in December, compared to 3.27 lakh units in December 2023. Total two-wheeler sales, including domestic sales and exports, declined 4% to 2.72 lakh units, while total commercial vehicle sales rose 16% to 50,952 units.
Despite robust exports, Bajaj Auto saw its overall two-wheeler sales dip because of the weakness in the domestic market. Domestic two-wheeler dispatches dropped to 1.28 lakh units from 1.58 lakh units in the year-ago period. Exports, on the other hand, rose 15% to 1.43 lakh units, exceeding the domestic volume.
On the commercial vehicle side, Bajaj Auto dispatched 34,085 units in the domestic market and exported 16,867 units, up 5% and 50% on year, respectively. The company offers three-wheelers in the commercial vehicle segment.
However, year-to-date volume for the April-December period recorded growth of 8% in total wholesales at 35.48 lakh units. Total two-wheeler sales came in at 30.39 lakh units, up 6% on year, while three-wheeler sales grew 8% to 5.09 lakh units.
Bajaj Auto’s total domestic sales during the nine-month period rose 6% to 21.74 lakh units and exports increased 12% to 13.73 lakh units.
