Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (M&M), one of India's leading automotive companies, has maintained its strong momentum into February 2025, reporting a 19% year-on-year growth in SUV sales. The company sold 50,420 SUVs in the domestic market last month, up from 42,401 units in February 2024, according to a press release issued on March 1.
Total auto sales, including exports, reached 83,702 vehicles, marking a 15% increase compared to the same period last year. This performance follows January's impressive results, where M&M reported an 18% growth with 50,659 passenger vehicles sold domestically.
"In February, we clocked SUV sales of 50,420, a growth of 19% and 83,702 total vehicles, a growth of 15%," said Veejay Nakra, President of the Automotive Division at M&M Ltd. "This strong performance is a result of a continued positive momentum for our SUV portfolio."
The February figures represent the fourth time in six months that Mahindra's monthly SUV dispatches have crossed the 50,000-unit threshold, reinforcing the company's dominant position in India's competitive utility vehicle segment.
While domestic passenger vehicle sales showed robust growth, Mahindra's commercial vehicle segment presented mixed results. The company's domestic commercial vehicle sales stood at 23,826 units in February. Within this category, light commercial vehicles (LCVs) between 2-3.5 tons saw a 9% increase to 19,155 units, while LCVs under 2 tons experienced a 21% decline to 3,290 units compared to February 2024.
A notable bright spot was the LCV greater than 3.5T and medium and heavy commercial vehicle (MHCV) segment, which grew by 23% year-on-year to 1,381 units.
Export figures for February were particularly impressive, with the company reporting 3,061 units shipped overseas, representing a substantial 99% increase from the 1,539 units exported in February 2024. Year-to-date exports have grown by 32% to 30,566 units.
Mahindra's consistent performance in early 2025 builds on the momentum it established in January, when it outpaced rival Tata Motors in passenger vehicle wholesales. The company's strategic focus on feature-rich SUVs tailored to Indian preferences continues to yield results, with its new electric vehicle offerings like the BE 6 and XEV 9e generating significant market interest.
As India's automotive market evolves, Mahindra's strong showing in the high-margin SUV segment positions it well to capitalize on changing consumer preferences and the industry's gradual shift toward utility vehicles.
