Electric two-wheeler manufacturer Ather Energy said its users covered 2.39 billion kilometres in 2024, leading to savings of ₹6.2 billion in petrol costs and preventing 64.84 million kilograms of CO2 emissions. The data comes from the company's year-end analysis of its fleet of 341,113 scooters.
The Bengaluru-based company's analysis revealed that riders in smaller cities covered greater distances than those in major metropolitan areas. Cities like Tiruppur, Malappuram and Kozhikode recorded average daily distances of over 33 kilometres, compared to about 19 kilometres in Bengaluru and Mumbai.
Average speeds also varied significantly across cities, with Aluva recording 24 kmph and Mumbai averaging 15.88 kmph. The data showed morning rush hour speeds were 20% higher than evening speeds across cities.
The company's analysis of feature usage during November 17-23, 2024, showed that navigation usage was 39% higher during evening hours (5 PM-8 PM) compared to morning hours (7 AM-11 AM). The Live Location Sharing feature saw 45% more users during evening hours.
Ather expanded its charging infrastructure in 2024, adding 799 fast chargers to reach a total of 2,583 nationwide. The network now connects major cities with tourist and business destinations, including Delhi to Agra and Mumbai to Pune.
The company's data also revealed variations in horn usage across cities, with Aizawl recording two horns per hour while cities like Kolkata and Howrah logged over 60 horns per hour.
Founded in 2013 by IIT Madras graduates Tarun Mehta and Swapnil Jain, Ather Energy competes with Ola Electric, TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto in India's growing electric two-wheeler market. The sector has seen significant growth with rising fuel prices and increasing environmental awareness driving adoption.
The Indian electric two-wheeler market recorded sales of over 900,000 units in 2023, according to Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV) data, with the segment expected to grow further as charging infrastructure expands and battery costs decline.
