The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Heavy Industries, celebrated its 58th Annual Day by showcasing its significant role in advancing the Indian automotive industry.
Since its establishment on December 10, 1966, ARAI has evolved from a vehicle testing agency into a comprehensive organization dedicated to research and development, certification, and skill development. Over the years, it has contributed to enhancing vehicle safety, supporting the formulation of industry standards, and promoting the adoption of sustainable technologies, aligning the Indian automotive sector with global benchmarks.
Recently, ARAI has introduced several advanced facilities to further its objectives. These include an airbag deployment facility, an advanced accelerated sled for safety testing, a photometry and optics laboratory for precise lighting evaluation, and an advanced noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) developmental center. These facilities are instrumental in evaluating vehicles against the New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP) protocols, helping to elevate vehicular safety standards to a global level.
To expand its capabilities, ARAI is developing a new Mobility Research Centre (MRC) in Takwe. This facility will include a smart city test track for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), cylinder testing and certification units, a hydrogen testing facility, and a High Energy Impact Test (HEIT) setup. The HEIT facility, which will be ISO 17025 accredited, is expected to be the first of its kind in India and Asia. It will enable domestic cylinder manufacturers to test products indigenously, supporting the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative. Additionally, an advanced battery safety testing facility is under construction at ARAI’s Chakan center to ensure electric vehicle safety as per emerging international standards.
ARAI has also made significant strides in research and development, focusing on areas like electric vehicles, autonomous driving technologies, and engine development. Some of its key projects include the development of AC/DC charging stations, low-emission vehicle (LEV) AC charge points, acoustic vehicle alerting systems (AVAS), battery management systems, and drive-by-wire platforms. The organization has also worked on lightweight aluminum extrusion profiles, the development of BS-VI compliant CNG engines for heavy-duty vehicles, and hydrogen-based proton exchange membrane (PEM) electric three-wheelers designed to extend range.
In the area of alternative fuels, ARAI has developed capabilities to cater to methanol, hydrogen, HCNG, biodiesel, and other sustainable energy sources. This initiative aligns with its commitment to promoting the use of cleaner and more efficient fuel alternatives in the automotive sector.
ARAI’s emphasis on skill development has been a cornerstone of its operations. Through the ARAI Academy, the organization offers training programs tailored to both students and industry professionals. Additionally, platforms such as TechNovuss and ARAI-AMTIF provide opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and technical support for startups and MSMEs. Events like the biennial Symposium on International Automotive Technology (SIAT) serve as avenues for knowledge dissemination and engagement with industry stakeholders.
Dr. Reji Mathai, Director of ARAI, highlighted the organization’s ongoing efforts to address the evolving needs of the automotive industry. He noted ARAI’s diversification into sectors such as aerospace and railways, alongside its commitment to fostering innovation through initiatives like mobility hackathons and events like BAJA. Dr. Mathai also emphasized the organization’s focus on sustainability, with initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impact and supporting a greener planet.
