Volvo Auto India has launched the all-new S90 luxury sedan in India at Rs 53.5 lakh (pre-octroi, ex-showroom, Mumbai).
A replacement for the S80, the S90 shares its underpinnings with the automaker’s range-topping SUV, the XC90. It rivals the likes of the Audi A6, new Jaguar XF, Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5-series.
Like the XC90, the S90 too uses Volvo’s latest design language with both models sharing design cues including the upright grille, the Thor’s Hammer LED headlamps and the dashboard design.
The S90 is available in one fully loaded Inscription trim only. It is powered by the automaker’s 2.0-litre D4 diesel engine that develops 190hp of power and 400Nm of torque, and is paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox that sends power to the front wheels. In 2017, however, the carmaker will introduce the more powerful 235hp twin-turbo D5 diesel motor to the line-up.
Being a fully loaded trim, the S90 comes with quite a few luxuries. The feature list includes LED headlamps, electric-adjust front seats with memory and ventilation, drive modes, auto park assist, four-zone auto climate control, Nappa leather upholstery, hands-free tailgate operation, a Bowers & Wilkins audio system and a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, and Apple CarPlay. Volvo has also fitted the S90 with rear air suspension. Safety systems include airbags, lane keep assist, seatbelt pretensioners and emergency brake assist.
Volvo's aggressive pricing strategy for the S90 in this segment is more in line with that of entry-level diesel models of rivals. It must be noted that the S90 is only available as a CBU import. Deliveries of the luxury sedan are set to start in December 2016.
Speaking at the launch today, Tom von Bonsdorff, MD, Volvo Auto India, said: “The S90 delivers class-leading safety, bespoke Scandinavian design, and sublime comfort. Packed with features that envelope customers in luxury, we see a tremendous response already.”
