TVS Motor Company has launched a strategic assault on the 125cc two-wheeler market in India. Three weeks after it launched the 125cc Raider motorcycle, the Chennai-based OEM has launched the new Jupiter 125 at Rs 73,400 (ex-showroom Delhi), thereby expanding its Jupiter portfolio.
Launched on September 17, 2013 as a 110cc scooter, the Jupiter brand has completed eight years. On May 14, 2015, less than two years after launch, the scooter crossed the 500,000-unit sales mark, providing a glimpse into its potential. Thirty months since launch, on June 13, 2016, the Jupiter crossed the million sales mark. On September 26, 2017, the Jupiter crossed the 2-million sales mark. As per Autocar Professional’s data analytics, the 110cc Jupiter is nearing the 4-million units sales milestone in the domestic market.
Targeting young India
Targeted at young scooter riders, the Jupiter 125 gets progressive neo masculine styling, chrome accents, an LED headlamp and signature front light guides along with an elegant tail-lamp with a grab-rail reflector. Other styling highlights include a 3D emblem, premium painted inner panels and disc-equipped variant comes with diamond-cut alloy wheels.
The new feature-laden and more powerful Jupiter 125cc is bigger and more spacious with industry-first features such as the largest under-seat storage, segment-leading longest seat, progressive neo masculine styling and unrivalled mileage.
The Jupiter 125 comes with external fuel fill in the front, side stand indicator and engine inhibitor, all-in-one lock and mobile charger with front glovebox.
The scooter is powered by a single-cylinder, 4-stroke, air-cooled 124.8cc engine, which develops maximum power of 6 kW @ 6500 rpm and torque of 10.5 Nm @ 4,500 rpm. It comes equipped with a semi-digital speedometer with smart alerts, average and real-time mileage indicators. The Jupiter 125 also gets body balance technology, front telescopic suspension and three-step adjustable rear shocks with monotube canister gas-charged shock absorbers.
TVS claims the Jupiter 125 has the largest under-seat storage of 33 litres and is the first scooter in India to accommodate two full-face helmets. What's more, it has the longest seat in the segment along with increased front leg space. TVS says the scooter has "exceptional fuel economy" but has not provided specific fuel efficiency numbers. Thje fuel efficiency is a result of the company's Ecothrust Fuel injection (ETFi) technology which offers improved mileage, better startability, refinement, and durability. There's also TVS intelliGO which intelligently switches off the engine during long idling like traffic signals and other transient stops.
