Three months after the launch of the Speed 400 in India, Triumph Motorcycles and Bajaj Auto have launched the Scrambler 400 X priced at Rs 263,000 (ex-showroom Delhi).
The Scrambler 400 X, which is Rs 30,000 costlier than the Speed 400, gets a taller suspension, off-road footpegs, sump guard and headlight grille as standard fitment. Like the Speed 400, the Scrambler 400 X will be retailed from the exclusive Triumph dealer network which is to be rapidly ramp up across over 100 cities by end-March 2024.
Designed in Hinckley, UK, the two new Triumph motorcycles are built in Bajaj Auto’s Chakan plant near Pune. The Triumph Scrambler 400 X shares the liquid-cooled, 398cc, single-cylinder engine, which develops 40hp at 8000rpm and 37.5Nm at 6500rpm, as the Speed 400 and comes mated to a six-speed gearbox along with a slip-and-assist clutch.
What’s different is that the Scrambler 400 X has taller suspension units and a 19-inch front wheel. This translates into a commanding seat height of 835mm and 195mm ground clearance, clearly indicating the motorcycle’s focus on off-roading duties. And, at 185kg, it is also 9kg heavier than its Speed sibling.
The tyres on the Scrambler 400 X and Speed 400 are also different – the 400 X is shod with a 100/80-19 tyre up front and a 140/80-17 at the rear. While the rear brake is the same, the front brake on the Scrambler is a larger 320mm unit. The features on the Scrambler 400 X stay the same as the Speed 400, but the rear ABS can be turned off here.
In terms of rivals to the Triumph Scrambler 400 X in India, there is the Yezdi Scrambler (Rs 210,000 to Rs 212,000) albeit it is not as powerful or feature-laden as this latest Triumph. The closest rival in terms of performance and capability is the Bajaj Auto-manufactured KTM 390 Adventure X. Priced at Rs 281,000 (ex-showroom, India), it is Rs 18,000 more expensive than the Scrambler 400 X.
