The Tata Nexon has received a strong four-star crash test rating from global safety watchdog Global NCAP.
In the first set of its SaferCarsForIndia results for 2018, Global NCAP has released the result of the crash tests conducted on Tata Motors' compact SUV launched in September 2017. The Nexon, which is sold in its standard version with frontal double airbags, frontal double pretensioners, ABS brakes and ISOFIX anchorages, achieved a strong result of four stars for adult occupant protection and three stars for child occupant protection.
According to GNCAP, the Nexon with safety features can offer four-star adult occupant protection with good protection for head and neck of the driver and passenger and adequate protection for their chests with a stable structure at 64kph offset deformable barrier crash test.
The ISOFIX anchorages with ISOFIX Child Restraint Systems (CRS) made available by Tata Motors, helped the model to achieve three stars for child occupant protection. The rearward-facing CRS installed with ISOFIX anchorages showed good protection to the 18-month-old child, while the ISOFIX forwards facing installed CRS offered good protection for head and limited protection to the chest.
According to David Ward, secretary general of Global NCAP: “The 4 stars awarded to the Tata Nexon represent a very strong result from a major Indian car manufacturer. This impressive safety performance is comfortably above the new crash test standards applied in India to new models since October 2017. It is very encouraging to see Tata aiming high for safety and a great example for others to follow. The race is clearly on for India’s first 5-star car!”
Dr Rohit Baluja, president of the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE) said: “I wish to congratulate Tata on this very good result. It shows that ‘Made in India’ and high levels of safety go together well. With excellent efforts like this from Tata and the new crash test standards now applied by the Indian government, we are going to see a steady improvement in the safety of new cars across the country and this will help to make our roads safer. ”
Nexon sets a new benchmark
The recently concluded safety tests by Global NCAP indicate that the Nexon achieved the highest adult safety score (13.56/17.00) amongst all the models tested across the Indian market.

Tata Motors says the energy-absorbing body structure with high-strength steel construction and critical reinforcements effectively absorb the impact energy and provide a stable load-path for protecting the passenger compartment from deformation.
For driver and passenger safety, the Nexon comes equipped with dual-frontal airbags and seatbelts with pre-tensioner, load-limiter and crash-locking tongue which prevents the uncontrolled forward movement of the occupant and avoids injuries. The driver footwell area is also reinforced with pedal blockers to prevent the feet injuries in the event of an unfortunate crash.
In addition to the structural integrity, Nexon has a range of safety features such as ABS with EBD as standard offering, ISOFIX anchorage for child-seat, child-safety door locks, voice-based alerts and front fog lamps with cornering assistance.
The Tata Nexon is available with petrol and diesel engine options, and a choice of manual and AMT gearboxes. Its prices start at Rs 615,000 for the base petrol-manual variant and go all the way up to Rs 10.59 lakh for the diesel-AMT variant (both prices, ex-showroom, Delhi).
The SaferCarsForIndia Campaign was launched by the Global New Car Assessment Programme (Global NCAP) in 2014 with the objective of promoting safer vehicles in the country and the establishment of a Bharat NCAP Programme. Between 2014 and 2017, Global NCAP says it has completed 25 safety assessments which have acted as an important catalyst in the safety improvement of Indian cars.
