Tata Motors has rolled out its 500,000th passenger vehicle unit manufactured at its Sanand factory located outside Ahmedabad, eight years after the 154,000 units per annum capacity plant commenced operations.
Currently operating at 100 percent capacity utilisation, the Sanand plant manufactures the Tiago hatchback and Tigor sedan. The facility also produced the first electric passenger vehicle for commercial use in the form of the Tigor EV and continues to support deliveries of the government-operated Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) order.
Commenting on the production milestone, Mayank Pareek, president, Passenger Vehicle Business Unit, Tata Motors said, “We, at Tata Motors, have been working aggressively towards our core strategy of Turnaround 2.0, aiming to ‘Win sustainably in PVs’. A lean manufacturing process plays a key role in our growth strategy enabling the Sanand plant to contribute around 60 percent of the overall PV production. We are extremely proud of achieving this milestone within our planned timeline. This is the result of the hard work put in by our dedicated workforce. The plant has evolved to become a modern, state-of-the-art facility and is playing a pivotal role meeting aspirations of Tiago and Tigor customers.”
Satish Borwankar, executive director and COO, Tata Motors said, “The Sanand plant has evolved over the years. From being a single-model plant, Sanand has grown into a multi-model plant and is on a roll since the introduction of the Tiago. We have achieved WCQ Level 3 and the operational efficiencies are at a high. We are delighted to celebrate this milestone and my best wishes to the team for many more such feats.”
State-of-the-art plant
Spread over 1,100 acres, Tata Motors’ Sanand plant has played an important role in the development of the automobile industry in the state of Gujarat. From a single-model plant in 2010, the plant today has emerged as a multi-model facility, becoming one of the most technologically advanced plants.
With a flexible assembly line, the plant today manufactures the Nano, Tiago and Tigor models spread across 21 variants with 150 vehicle combinations. It also produces engines – Revotron 1.2L – Petrol (Manual & Auto Transmission), Revotorq 1.05L – Diesel, 624 CC, MPFI – Petrol (Manual & Auto Transmission) and 1.2 NGTC – Petrol (Manual & Auto Transmission).
In the past couple of years, Tata Motors has witnessed strong growth in the market as a result of its aggressive turnaround strategy. This, according to the company, has been largely possible because of the many initiatives taken to optimise all business levers in the most effective manner possible.
Tata Motors increases PV market share to 6.83 percent
Tata Motors is seeing a smart uptick both in its PV and commercial vehicle sales. In the PV segment, most of its products have clicked with buyers with the Tiago hatchback and Nexon compact SUV being the standout performers and also regulars in the monthly Top 10 bestsellers.
The carmaker’s fast-improving fortunes can be seen in the growing market share – in the April-September 2018 period, Tata Motors sold a total of 119,193 PVs (+29.42%), which gives it a market share of 6.83 percent, up from 5.64 percent a year ago. This total includes 36,720 utility vehicles, which gives Tata Motors a UV market share of 7.91 percent in April-September 2018, more than double the 3.31 percent share it had in April-September 2017.
