The UV segment has been firing on all cylinders for some time now. In January 2018, a total of 85,850 UVs were sold across the country, registering 38 percent YoY growth and was the sole sub-segment within the PV segment to notch growth. For the April 2017 to January 2018 period, cumulative UV sales total 750,080 units notching 21.29 percent YoY growth.
In January 2018, Tata Motors sold 21,872 PVs (+48.58%) and in April-January sold 167,208 PVs (+18.21%). The Nexon has been a significant contributor to this growth and since its launch has gone home to 14,062 buyers till end-December 2017, averaging sales of 187 units per day.
Nexon receives over 25,000 bookings
The Nexon’s swanky styling and competitive pricing are attracting buyers. Tata Motors claims to have bagged over 25,000 bookings for the compact SUV, which has pushed the waiting period up to seven weeks, in some locations, depending on the variant.
The variants which have contributed majorly to the numbers are the top XZ+ and XT trims, with the dual-tone paint shade option on the XZ+ seeing the maximum demand. The XZ+ (dual-tone) diesel variant, priced at Rs 9.62 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), undercuts the top variants of the Maruti Vitara Brezza by Rs 11,000 and the Ford EcoSport by a whopping Rs 127,000.
Tata’s compact SUV is targeted at millennials and, according to dealer sources, over 65 percent of its customer base is less than 35 years old. Going by the feedback from dealers, it’s the Nexon’s contoured silhouette complemented by its funky, yet butch face that’s attracting buyers. Moreover, features like the Harman-sourced infotainment system and multi-drive modes only better the deal.
Tata Motors’ PV division is seeing a gradual uptick in its fortunes particularly since the Tiago hatchback, Tigor sedan and Hexa crossover expanded its stable of models with the Nexon providing the accelerative force.
In January 2018, Tata Motors’ SUV segment grew 188 percent after the Nexon and Hexa gained traction. The base, however, was low in the same period last year as the models weren’t part of Tata’s line-up then.
With the uptick in UV numbers, the company has also increased its PV market share to 6.18 percent from 5.64 percent a year ago. The UV segment contributed 38,020 unit sales in the overall PV sales, helping Tata Motors’ market share rise to 5.07 percent from 2.26 percent in April-January 2016-17.
