A little over two months after Tata Motors launched its first ever compact SUV – the Nexon – the company is seeing a handsome response from the marketplace. Earlier today, the 10,000th production-ready model rolled out from the Ranjangaon, Pune plant.
The Nexon has till end-October sold a total of 5,871 units – 4,366 diesel and 1,505 petrol – with November numbers yet to be revealed. Suffice it to say November sales would be in excess of 2,500 units.
Clearly, the Nexon is drawing customers into showrooms in droves. As previously reported, Tata Motors dealers across the country indicate that the Nexon is set to be the game-changer it is billed to be, and will help energise the company’s PV sales.
As with most new products, the maximum demand is for the top-spec trim variant. The Nexon XZ+, which comes loaded with all the bells and whistles like LED daytime running lamps, a 6.5-inch touchscreen and alloy wheels, commands a waiting period of around eight weeks at most locations. The top-spec variant gets the option of a dual-tone paint shade. Both the Moroccan Blue and the Vermont Red are the hot picks at most dealerships. Among the single-tone shade options, it's the silver and the grey that are in demand.
After the top-spec XZ+ trim, it's the XT and the lower XM trim that are popular. The XM gets a decent equipment list that includes a Harman-developed sound system, steering-mounted controls and rear parking sensors. The Nexon XT gets a cooled glovebox, automatic climate control and rear AC vents.
Tata Motors has launched the Nexon with two engine options mated to manual transmission only. The carmaker is currently testing an AMT-equipped variant that is expected to go on sale in the coming months.
Tata Motors’ PV division is seeing a marked uptick in its fortunes particularly since the Tiago hatchback, Tigor sedan and Hexa crossover expanded its stable of models with the Nexon providing the accelerative force. In the April-October 2017 period, the company has sold a total of 110,415 units, a year-on-year growth of 9.23 percent. What’s more, it has increased its PV market share to 5.78 percent from 5.70 percent a year ago. In the UV segment, with sales of 19,737 units, Tata Motors’ market share has risen to 3.80 percent from 2.08 percent in April-October 2016.
