Natarajan Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, the principal investment holding company of one of India’s largest and most respected business groups with revenues of over $110 billion, has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) today during a special ceremony hosted by the Vice-Chancellor and President of Macquarie University, Professor S Bruce Dowton.
The honorary doctorate recognises Dr Chandrasekaran’s distinguished career in business in India, Asia and globally.
Dr Chandrasekaran is also the chairman of key Tata companies including Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tata Steel, Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover. Dr Chandrasekaran stands out as a giant of India’s IT industry. He is passionate about health and education and has been a champion for promoting STEMM skills for over two decades.
Under Chandra’s leadership, TCS has consistently maintained its pre-eminence as India’s largest IT company and has been placed among the ‘Big 3’ most valuable IT services brands worldwide. It is ranked as one of the World’s Most Innovative Companies by Forbes and recognised as a Global Top Employer across 24 countries by the Top Employers Institute.
Honorary degrees are awarded in recognition of exceptional achievement or contribution in relation to a particular field or discipline, to the University and/or society. The diverse recipients of honorary awards demonstrate the breadth of the University’s areas of interest and expertise.
“Macquarie University is delighted to confer an honorary degree on Chandra as a respected leader in business and as a great visionary and friend of the University. We honour his outstanding career in IT and business, and his remarkable stewardship of the Tata Group,” said Vice-Chancellor Professor S Bruce Dowton.
“It is a privilege and an honour to be recognised by the renowned Macquarie University. AI, Bio-informatics and Data Science will have a profound positive impact on businesses and society. In this context, the importance of STEMM education cannot be over emphasised. Getting young people into STEMM will help every community to participate in this new physical-digital world and the Tata Group is committed to playing our role in this important initiative,” said N Chandrasekaran, chairman, Tata Sons.
Dr Chandrasekaran graduated from Coimbatore Institute of Technology, India, in 1983 with a Bachelor of Applied Science, and went on to complete a Master of Computer Application at the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, in India in 1986.
