Bajaj Auto’s Board of Directors, at its meeting held on March 18, 2025 has approved the re-appointment of Rajiv Bajaj as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the company for another term of five consecutive years with effect from April 1, 2025.
Rajiv Bajaj graduated first in class with distinction, in Mechanical Engineering, from the University of Pune in 1988, and then completed his masters in Manufacturing Systems Engineering, with distinction, from the University of Warwick in 1990.
On returning from the UK, he started off at the shopfloor level at Bajaj Auto where he did a three-year stint. He gained experience in the areas of Manufacturing and Supply Chain (1990-95), R&D and Engineering (1995-2000), and Marketing and Sales (2000-2005), and rose to be managing director of Bajaj Auto in April 2005. He has been on the board of Bajaj Auto since March 5, 2002.
As is well known, he has been instrumental in introducing Bajaj Auto to the motorcycle market, a segment he believed had great growth potential. This decision has changed the face of Bajaj Auto and greatly accelerated the company’s growth.
In 2005, Rajiv Bajaj was voted Autocar Professional's first Man of the Year for having led the company's transition from a scooter manufacturer to a leading motorcycle OEM. He has a strong belief in brand-led business strategy, as seen in Brand Pulsar and other motorcycle models, as well as in engaging strongly in the global two-wheeler market.
In recent years, he has engineered the re-entry of the company into the scooter world with the reborn avatar of the iconic Chetak . . . this time around in zero-emission electric avatar in January 2020. The Chetak is currently among the top-selling electric two-wheelers in India.
In the current fiscal’s first 11 months, Bajaj Auto has sold a total of 21,24,590 two-wheelers in the domestic market, up 3.27% YoY, and exported 15,41,987 units, an increase of 14.52% YoY. While the company is currently ranked third in the domestic motorcycle market in FY2025 with 18,76,490 units, with an 18% market share, it is the No. 1 two-wheeler exporter. In the scooter market, where it sells a single product – the Chetak EV – Bajaj Auto has sold 231,050 units in the past 11 months, an increase of 123% year on year.
Bajaj Auto is the market leader in the three-wheeler industry – both in the domestic and export markets. In the April 2024 to February 2025 period, the company has sold 441,501 three-wheelers (up 4% YoY) for a commanding 65% share of the total 6,78,607 units. Of the total exports of made-in-India 278,006 three-wheelers in the past 11 months, Bajaj accounts for 166,703 units (up 18%) and a 60% share.
