Osamu Suzuki, the transformative leader who built Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) into a global automotive powerhouse during his more than four decades at the helm and passed away on December 25, 2024, has been posthumously awarded the prestigious Padma Vibhushan under the ‘Trade and Industry’ category on the occasion of India’s 76th Republic Day.
The Padma Awards – one of the highest civilian awards of India, are conferred in three categories: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. They are given in various disciplines and fields of activities – art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service. While ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service, ‘Padma Bhushan’ is for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated all the Padma awardees of 2025. He remarked that each awardee was synonymous with hard work, passion and innovation, which has positively impacted countless lives. In a post on X, he wrote: “Congratulations to all the Padma awardees! India is proud to honour and celebrate their extraordinary achievements. Their dedication and perseverance are truly motivating. Each awardee is synonymous with hard work, passion and innovation, which has positively impacted countless lives. They teach us the value of striving for excellence and serving society selflessly.”
MASTERMIND OF SUZUKI' MOTOR'S EXPANSION INTO INDIA
Rising to president in 1978 and later serving as chairman and CEO of SMC, Suzuki became renowned for his conservative financial management and laser focus on small, affordable vehicles. He pioneered Japan's ‘kei car’ segment of micro-vehicles and masterminded Suzuki's expansion into India through Maruti Suzuki, which grew to become the country's largest automobile manufacturer.
Despite being a relatively small player in the global automotive industry, Suzuki maintained the company's independence through careful financial management and strategic focus. His hands-on leadership style and attention to detail helped the company navigate multiple economic downturns while remaining profitable.
It was only Osamu Suzuki’s doggedness that saw him edge out giants like Volkswagen, Renault and Fiat, as well as fellow Japanese rival Daihatsu to form a joint venture with Maruti Udyog. Partnering with the government and investing in a country which had no history of car making was an incredible leap of faith. However, the shrewd Suzuki knew he had exactly what India needed – a modern, reliable and fuel-efficient car that was cheap to buy and own. Suzuki’s little SS80 (and subsequently S308B) sparked a revolution and put an entire nation on wheels with the Maruti 800, and subsequently the Alto.
Even in challenging times, such as during the 2008 financial crisis and the contentious dissolution of an alliance with Volkswagen in 2011, Suzuki's decisive leadership kept the company on course. His business philosophy emphasized frugality and efficient production processes, which became hallmarks of the company's operations.
In 2021, at age of 91, Suzuki stepped down as chairman, ending one of the longest leadership tenures in automotive history.
