Ola Electric takes the EV battle to the mass-market ICE scooter segment with new S1 Air scooter.

Ola Electric today revealed the latest avatar of its electric scooter – the S1 Air – and priced it at Rs 84,999, with an introductory pricing of Rs 79,999 for those who book the S1 Air on or before Diwali (October 24, 2022).
Built on the same Ola S1 platform, the Ola S1 Air is differentiated by five two-tone colours – Neo Mint, Jet Black, Coral Glam, Porcelain White and Liquid Silver. The S1 Pro is 25kg lighter than the S1 Pro and weighs 99kg, compare to the 110kg a conventional ICE scooter weighs.
Bhavish Agarwal, chairman and Group CEO, Ola said: “The S1 Air is much lighter, faster and nimbler to handle. We have re-engineered the powertrain and battery pack too. The S1 Air, which has a top speed of 85kph and 0-40kph in 4.3 seconds, has a 4.5kW hub motor and a 2.5 kWh battery pack. The latest Ola has an IDC range of 100km in Eco Mode. It’s the perfect urban scooter.”
He added: “Over the next 12 months, we will build EV products in all two-wheeler categories: commuter scooters, motorcycles, sportsbikes and more to ensure everyone buying an ICE vehicle has a much better EV product to choose from. Once you experience and buy an EV, you are never buying back to ICE.”
The S1 Air gets the same 7-inch touchscreen TFT display as its more upmarket siblings and even gets reversing functionality. The S1 Air is equipped with the MoveOS 3 software as standard, which will open up features such as hill-hold functionality, moods, different profiles that eliminate the need to share passcodes, proximity alert and compatibility to Ola’s Hypercharger network. With Ola Hyperchargers, the company claims users will now be able to charge their e-scooters up to 50km in 15 minutes, at a charging speed of 3km per minute.
The S1 Air's redesigned seat sports a more basic single-piece tubular grab handle. Storage space is 34 litres compared to 36 litres on its more expensive siblings. The latest Ola product has a flat floorboard, which makes ferrying luggage around easier than on the curved floorboard found on the other two Ola e-scooters.
The company has opened bookings for the Ola S1 Air at Rs 999 today. The purchase window will open in February 2023 and deliveries are slated to begin in early April 2023.
Ola Electric back in No. 2 position after 3 months
Ola Electric, which had opened FY2023 with 12,703 units in April 2022 and 9,255 units in May and held the No. 1 position for Q1 FY2023 with cumulative sales of 27,849 units but saw demand slowing down in June-July-August, bounced back with a strong performance in September 2022. With sales of 9,649 units last month, it is not only the best-selling OEM but has also taken the overall No. 2 position from Hero MotoCorp for H1 FY2023 with 44,801 sales in April-September 2022.
