Bangalore-based electric cab service provider, Lithium Urban Technology has added green number plates to its fleet of cars. The first batch of the green registration is being sported on the batch of the Mahindra eVerito that is being used by the company.
Interestingly, Lithium Urban has also been one of the early customers to Mahindra’s electric vehicle portfolio. In an earlier interaction with Autocar Professional, Mahesh Babu, CEO, Mahindra electric had said that the first batch of Mahindra EVs have already crossed 180,000km with Lithium. And this usage in an electric car gave an operation cost of around 70 paise per kilometre, or savings that are equal to buying another car.
The green license plates had got the central government nod in May 2018 and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) gave the green signal in August 2018. The decision, according to the government, is part of its move to encourage people to take to using electric vehicles (EVs).
Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Shipping, Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, had earlier said that the distinctive number plates will allow for easy identification for EVs, which will allow for preferential treatment in parking and free entry in congested zones among other proposed benefits like concessional toll.
