LA Motor Show 2013: Volkswagen e-Golf

November 21, 2013: The all-electric Volkswagen e-Golf has had its North American debut at the LA motor show.

The e-Golf is powered by an electric motor that produces 113bhp and 199lb ft of torque. Volkswagen says the car can achieve a top speed of 87mph and accelerate from 0-100kph in 10.4 seconds. The car has an average range of between 70 and 90 miles.

Underpinned by VW's MQB architecture, the car weighs in at 1402kg, with 318kg of its mass being made up by the car's lithium-ion battery pack.

The e-Golf allows drivers to select from three driving modes, dubbed Normal, Eco and Eco+. The most efficient driving mode, Eco+, limits the output of the electric engine to 73bhp and 129lb ft.

VW says it has reduced the drag coefficient of the e-Golf significantly by reducing the size of the front radiatior grille, and fitting new bodywork – including a new rear spoiler to manage airflow. Inside, the e-Golf features VW's Car-Net connected services, plus leather seats, a rear-view camera and parking sensors.

The e-Golf was first revealed alongside the e-Up at the Frankfurt motor show earlier this year. The e-Up is powered by an 80bhp electric motor and weighs 1185kg. Both cars come with the option of a Combined Charging System, which allows both AC and DC inputs to be used to charge the battery. Volkswagen has yet to announce official pricing for the e-Golf.
