Kinetic Engineering, the flagship company of the Kinetic Group which manufactures its own gearboxes for commercial vehicle applications and transmission components for tractors, passenger cars and off-road vehicles, is now targeting the electric vehicle market.

The company has announced that it plans to utilise its technical, manufacturing and vertical-integrated in-house capabilities to provide high-quality systems and components to its EV customers. It will soon initiate development of axles and gearboxes for the EV market.

Kinetic Engneering says it sees a huge opportunity for complete powertrain solution and will design, develop and manufacture two-speed gearboxes, and complete rear axle assemble along with the motor and controller, which can be retrofitted on vehicles. The company says it will develop motors in the range of 1 KW to 10 KW that can be used for scooters, mopeds, three-wheelers and commercial vehicles (trucks and buses).

The component maker sees a huge demand from existing vehicles, "which have crossed their useful life" and can see a new lease of life by getting converted to EVs. The rollout of the kits is expected in a phase-wise manner, starting with the two- and three-wheeler segment followed by introduction of higher KW powertrains. Kinetic Engineering says at presence such kits are being imported, mainly from China and therefore developing such kits will be a pioneering imitative for the company.

Commenting on the development, Ajinkya Firodia, MD, Kinetic Engineering, said: "In the automotive world, electro-mobility is gaining massive acceptance as it eliminates emissions which is one of the major reasons for climate change, and reduces the use of fossil fuels thereby protecting the environment. We see this initiative of Kinetic Engineering as  contributing to our government's mission of promoting EVs as a part of controlling air pollution and providing a cleaner, greener environment. It is a futuristic step for our automotive industry and also backs the 'Make in India' initiative. We expect to service around 400,000 units across three-wheelers, two-wheelers and mini 4-wheel applications by the year 2025, having a business potential of more than Rs 200 crore."
