After the recent announcement by Yamaha Motor Co to recall its YZF-R1 and R1M superbikes worldwide over a faulty gearbox issue, India Yamaha Motor has also announced a voluntary recall of the models.
Commenting on the reasons for the recall, Ravinder Singh, VP-strategy & planning, Yamaha Motor India Sales said: “During the extensive study of the products, our parent company Yamaha Motor Co, Japan has found a defect, which relates to deformation of transmission gears and breakage which exists in R1 and R1M motorcycles manufactured in the year 2015. However, no such problem has been reported from anywhere in India so far but we value our customers and their safety is our prime concern. Therefore, India Yamaha Motor has decided to run a voluntary recall campaign on 9 units of motorcycles which include 7 units of YZF-R1 and 2 units of YZF-R1M.”
Yamaha will be rectifying the error by replacing the transmission with a modified one free of cost, added Singh. The company plans to begin the voluntary recall exercise today through a factory modification campaign which will be run through its authorized superbike dealership network across the country. The customers will be contacted through mail as well as phone calls starting today.
This is not the first time Yamaha has issued a recall of its flagship superbikes in India as last year itself the company had recalled 100 units of its liquid-cooled, in-line four-cylinder, 998cc YZF-R1 due to some technical snag with the headlights. The company had recalled 56,082 Ray scooters in July 2013 after it detected insufficient strength in the handlebar of some units. The total units recalled by India Yamaha Motor now stands at 56,191.
