Enthused by the success of its made-for-India Creta SUV, Hyundai Motor India is looking to bring the latest edition of its global SUV, the Tucson to India. The Korean carmaker used the 2016 Auto Expo as a platform to showcase the car which is likely to be launched in India in September this year.
Speaking at the Tucson unveil, YK Koo, MD and CEO, Hyundai Motor India, said, “The Auto Expo is a very important platform to showcase Hyundai’s strength of design, technology and future products.”
The new Tucson is Hyundai’s only SUV which is not on sale yet in India. Currently in its third generation, the new car was shown at the Geneva Motor Show in 2015 and features an attractive modern design that brings it in line with Hyundai’s biggest SUV – the Santa Fe.
Hyundai Motor India is likely to import the Tucson initially with a starting price of approximately Rs 18 lakh, which will allow it to undercut its long-time rival, the Honda CR-V. Company insiders think it will be much more successful than big sedans like the Sonata. It won’t be the first time the Tucson has come to India though; Hyundai sold the original one briefly in 2005 for Rs 14-15 lakh.
The company has sold a total of 360,718 units in the domestic market in the April 2015-January 2016 period and exported 130,561 units.
