The United States-headquartered conformal coating giant Humiseal is looking to set up its manufacturing unit in India soon.

The conformal coatings produced by Humiseal are used to protect automotive electronic assemblies. Conformal coating material is applied to electronic circuitry to act as protection against moisture, dust, humidity, damage caused by insects, chemicals, and temperature extremes that, if uncoated (non-protected), could result in damage or failure of the electronics to function.

Currently the company has been supplying its coating products to the Indian automotive industry through its channel partner Pune-based Drive Technologies.

Talking to Autocar Professional, Prasad Gurjal, managing partner of Drive Technologies, said: “Automotive electronic assemblies continue to become an increasingly sophisticated and important aspect of both the functionality and reliability of modern automobiles.”

These assemblies continue to be placed in ever more demanding end-use environments, where the risk of degradation in performance, due to extraneous factors such as humidity, salt-spray, noxious gases and other sources of corrosion continues to increase rapidly.

Today, electronics manage critical automotive controls guiding powertrain, safety, comfort, entertainment, and navigation systems. Many mechanical components, such as hydraulic power steering and hydraulic power brakes, are being replaced with innovative electronics.

Increasingly, conformal coating is becoming one of the most important methodologies requested by OEMs and used by Tier 1-Tier 3 automotive electronics suppliers to prevent corrosion and degradation of assemblies in use, thus maximizing reliability and minimizing warranty claims due to extraneous corrosion.

HumiSeal is a leading supplier of conformal coatings to the automotive industry for in-cabin electronics, under-hood electronics and exterior electronic applications, supplying every major OEM, through multiple Tier 1 through to Tier 3 suppliers.

The company is also supplying its product to protect electronic assemblies in the sectors like industrial control electronics, renewable energy, military and aerospace and consumer electronics.

Currently Humiseal has its production plants in multiple places the world like the US, England and Japan. As India is emerging one of the major destination for electronic assembly based products, the company is weighing its option to set up plant in India. According to sources, the company has been conducting feasibility studies in a few southern states to set up its greenfield manufacturing plant.

The company’s specialised coatings are primarily used in the vehicle compartments like airbag control modules, anti-lock brake control, climate controls, engine control module (ECM), firewall junction box assemblies, heated seat control module, keyless entry, occupant position detection system, power door control modules, power mirror controls, power seat control, window modules, speedometer module and tyre pressure monitor.
