Honeywell Turbo Technologies India (HTT India) has become the first company in India to locally manufacture and supply petrol turbochargers to any vehicle manufacturer.
The company is known to have partnered with Tata Motors in the development of its first-ever petrol turbocharged engine, the Revotron 1.2T, which powers the recently launched Tata Zest sedan.
It can be recalled that Autocar Professional broke the news about HTT India beginning local production of petrol turbochargers at its Pune-based plant in July 2014. The demand for petrol turbochargers is expected to play a crucial role in the growth of this company, which sees a healthy market potential for turbo applications in 1.0 to 1.2-litre petrol engines.
HTT India's Pune plant currently produces over one million turbocharger units per annum and its capacity can be expanded up to 1.5 million units per year. The plant is equipped with 18 assembly lines, which currently roll out turbochargers for engine displacements ranging from 1.2 litres to 8.0 litres.
According to a statement released by the firm, HTT India’s engineering teams based in Pune and Bangalore had leveraged its local and global expertise in petrol turbo technologies to address the specific needs of Tata Motors.
The Revotron 1.2T features Honeywell’s second-generation petrol turbo technology, which incorporates the latest advances in aerodynamics and bearing systems, and delivers significantly improved fuel economy and driving performance in a 30 percent smaller space, lowering the overall system complexity and cost.
“We are proud to have met the challenge and helped Tata successfully launch its new petrol engine in the exciting new Zest,” said Milind Godbole, managing director, Honeywell Turbo Technologies India. “Honeywell has a strong presence in India and embraces its opportunity to contribute to the accelerating ‘Made-in-India’ campaign which is significant for moving its auto industry forward as a global player,” he added.
Downsized petrol engines using turbochargers not only help in delivering up to 20 percent better fuel economy and improved performance, but also mark a trend of weight reduction and compliance to the stricter emission norms in the times to come.
Honeywell says it continues to launch an average of 100 new applications every year with around 500 in its development pipeline while working with nearly every major auto manufacturer in the world.
