Honda Cars India today announced that it will voluntarily replace airbag inflators of 223,578 cars of previous generation models of the CR-V, Civic, City and Jazz as part of Honda’s preventive global recall campaign concerning airbag inflators.
This latest recall by Honda Cars India has become the single largest recall in the history of the Indian automotive industry, beating the recall of 155,000 cars announced by GM India on July 13 this year for faulty keyless entry systems on the Chevrolet Spark, Beat and Enjoy models.
“The replacement would be carried out free of cost at HCIL dealerships across India in a phased manner, starting from 12th October 2015, and the company will communicate with customers directly,” said the automaker in a release today.
The City sedan is the worst affected with 143,154 units manufactured between 2007 and 2012 being recalled. More than 54,200 Civics, produced between 2003-2012, have been recalled as well. The carmaker says customers can check whether their car is covered under this campaign by submitting their 17-character alpha-numeric Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on Honda Cars India’s website.
With this round of recalls, Honda Cars India has become the manufacturer with the second largest recalls in the country. HCIL has now recalled 312,533 units since July 2012, just short of Ford India’s 316,400 recalls.
Since the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturer’s (SIAM) Voluntary Code for recalls came into effect in July 2012, the number of vehicles recalled in India has risen sharply, crossing the one-million mark in May 2015.
