The country's leading two-wheeler manufacturer Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India today announced that it had crossed sales of over 60 lakh cumulative two-wheelers in North India in its 18th year of operations.
The company says the feat in the region was driven by demand for Honda’s two-wheelers in the states of Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and two union territories - Delhi and Chandigarh. The company said in the first nine years of operation (2001 and 2010) it managed to add 10 lakh customers, while the next 50 lakh customers took the same duration (9 years, 2010 – 2019).
According to HMSI, while it took nine years for the first 10 lakh customers to come on board, the most recent 10 lakh addition happened in just 1.4 years.

For the two-wheeler (2W) maker, one of the major highlights of the region was the growing acceptance of scooters. In 2006-07, scooters accounted for only 7 percent of the overall 2W sales, whereas at present according to HMSI, one in every three customers is purchasing a scooter in north India. The scooterisation phenomenon in the region was driven by factors like more women joining the workforce, faster expansion of road network in rural areas and increasing demand for a unisex two-wheeler that fulfils the need of every family member. The two-wheeler maker claims that every second customer who purchases a scooter in the North selects a Honda.
