Pune-based auto major Bajaj Auto today reported its sales numbers for the month of July 2019. The company, which is the leading two-wheeler exporter in the country, has seen its motorcycle exports once again act as a buffer against slowing domestic market sales.
In July 2019, Bajaj Auto sold a total of 381,530 two-wheelers and three-wheelers globally, which constitutes a drop of 5 percent, compared to 400,343 units in July 2018. Of this total, 205,470 units (-13%) were sold in the domestic market and 176,060 units (8%) were exported.
Last month, the company’s domestic two-wheeler business saw a decline of 15 percent at 170,978 units compared to 201,433 units in July 2018. This fall was compensated overall by robust exports of 151,232 motorcycles (15%) compared to 131,247 units in July 2018.
In its commercial vehicle business, the company sold 34,492 units (-4%) in the domestic market and exported 24,828 units (-21%).
The Indian two-wheeler industry has been pushed to the wall in the domestic market as a result of the unprecedented sales slowdown, upcoming BS VI norms, and the government's push towards mass electric mobility. It is expected that Bajaj Auto might announce its foray in the electric vehicle business later this year.
