Bajaj Auto today launched its much-awaited Dominar 400 premium sports bike with prices starting at Rs 136,000 (ex-showroom Delhi).
The Dominar 400 is powered by the same 373cc, fuel-injected, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine as the KTM 390 series, and is mated to a six-speed gearbox that comes with a slipper-clutch as standard. It uses a finger-follower-camshaft 4-valve-per-cylinder setup along with Bajaj's triple spark-plug technology and develops 35hp of power at 8,000rpm, and 35Nm of torque at 6,500rpm. Bajaj Auto claims that the Dominar can go from 0-100kph in 8.23sec and reach a top speed of 148kph.
Speaking at the launch, Eric Vas, president – Motorcycles, Bajaj Auto said, “The Dominar 400 is the biggest motorcycle in its class. We are looking to sell 15,000 units a month, comprising both domestic and export markets. Exports will start in February 2017, initially to Europe and then to ASEAN markets like Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia.”
The 182kg Dominar 400 comes with a beam-type perimeter frame, with 43mm telescopic forks at the front and an adjustable monoshock at the rear. It is fitted with a 13-litre fuel tank, a 320mm single disc brake in front and a 230mm unit at the rear, and gets dual-channel ABS on the fully loaded variant (Rs 1.5 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi).
The Dominar 400 is to initially be sold at 80 showrooms across 22 cities in the country. The company will also allow customers to book the bike through a centralized online booking at Rs 9,000. Deliveries will commence in January 2017.
“The Dominar is placed in the Rs 100,000-Rs 200,000 price category, which is a Rs 15,000 crore segment. Next year, this motorcycle segment, which currently sees sales of 60,000-70,000 units a month, will account for a million bikes a year. Bajaj Auto is targeting sales of 200,000 units in the first year, which means it will account for a 20 percent market share and a Rs 2,500 crore revenue,” added Vas.
